Starter gear damper, is it needed?

My understanding is that that gear only moves when I am using the starter motor to start the engine, so even if it wobbles a bit it can't really hurt anything and once I am running it should make no difference. Has anyone ran their bike without one of these?

I wouldn't want anything unnecessarily wiggling around, especially in regards to gear or sprocket teeth meshing.

If you don't know which one you need then buy the thickest and lap down the lip on wet and dry paper until the gear stops being pulled round by the crank.
You need just enough clearance to allow the starter gear to spin freely without drag.

In the image below, the two dampers on the left measure 6.4mm, and the one on the right is 8.4mm. These dampers may be similar on engines other than a J-model.
Note the Kawasaki *** identification detail molded into the rubber
The back flat side is metal. IMO to reduce thickness, I would sand off material from the rubber edge which faces and rubs against the engine

No! It's the rubber lip that needs reducing.Hi what's the average thickness of the damper I assume it's the steel you lap down in size if too thick

It's mainly for anti rattle..Hi got two dampers from the USA one std and one thick all I could get , how import is the shimming ?? Never shimed a rubber part before lol

If too thick the rubber lip needs reducing just enough to allow the large starter gear to free wheel /remain stationary when the engine is running.
Too tight and the crank will spin the gear anti clockwise and drive the starter motor.
