To reduce the aphids on the milkweed, we use a very mild detergent mix. It kills the aphids but washes off in the rain. I think my girlfriend uses vinegar is she needs to kill off some unwanted plants (we have some crazy vines that choke off everything). It's very potent, and we accidentally spilled a little more than we wanted, which produced a burned out spot on the yard.

Jerry Baker said when the pilgrims came over here with their fruit trees, the borers were eating them up. The Indians told them to use urine to kill them. It worked.

1 year later we were back at the place where I took the picture of the Monarch hoping to see some butterfly's or caterpillars but no luck.
But we had grabbed a milkweed pod last year and planted the seeds around the house and got lucky
These shots were taken yesterday and today in our front yard, it looks like we have more seeds for next year :woohoo:
Also ran into this guy yesterday too

Sorry to hear that Lou, we had a lot of butterfly's come through a couple weeks ago, they were usually either dark or yellow
but not many orange ones.
Maybe the extra hot weather?

I didn't really mean that the way it sounded. We only looked a little, out in the wild. Usually we raise a dozen or so from mail-order eggs or first instar caterpillars, but my girlfriend now volunteers at a wildlife center so she didn't have time to do it this year.

Time to dust off an oldie
After 3 years of struggling with milk weed we planted some Butterfly weed seeds and the monarchs dig it.
We have a lot of predators so Mrs bluej has been bringing them in when they get 2 inches, they may eat leaves for a couple more days then they go right to the top and make a chrysalis, 2 weeks later they pop out and go.
Cindy' s got a bunch in there now and more coming.

Very nice! Yeah milkweed is strange. It's really hard to get it to take root, but when it does, it takes hold really well. We only had success with transplanting adult plants, then they reproduce and you get a few more plants every year. We now have quite a few 6ft and 8 ft stalks.
We haven't had luck with starting from seed. I keep throwing seeds at the grassy area along the railroad tracks and they just never get started.

we will keep at the milkweed but the butterfly weed really brings them in and comes back next year, Cindy was standing by the plant and one flew up and laid an egg.
I checked out your video of the praying mantis's and I noticed one was feasting on a bunch of aphids, we have been struggling with them and a mantis would be helpful if it didn't eat caterpillars
I may have to look for some available road side milkweed

Yeah, we've been battling the aphids as well. For a awhile we used a very dilute detergent with a spray bottle and that did reduce them a lot, but lately my wife has just been getting rid of the leaves that have the aphids, now that we have more plants to select from.
