I was giving my chain a quick once over and noticed the keeper and outside of the master were gone! I found an implement size to get me home. I now put RTV over the keeper and used to carry a spare. On a sickle paying attention is a must.

A little while back when I was lubing my drive chain I found the clip from the master link was missing. I can't image why unless if fractured and fell off. No harm done since I found the problem before the master link side plate came off, but if I hadn't found it when I did it might have turned ugly. Maintenance is a good thing. Ed[/quote]

Perhaps everybody already knows this, but it's important when installing a master link that the open end is supposed to trail the closed end as the chain travels around and pulls the rear sprocket.
I believe that such orientation is to reduce the risk while riding of a stone or other road debris hitting the open end and dislodging the master link.

I always safety wire masterlinks. It helps keep the clip from disappearing and it is easy to see to make sure the clip is still in place.
