Oh, and your sprocket is worn out. Add a new chain and sprocket set to the shopping list.

Edit: may also need a clutch pushrod, and of course new seals for the transmission cover. Speaking of that, I've got some spare seals if you find yourself in need. Have to check but should have a full set. PM me if you want to discuss.

I realize you have something of a conflict of interest here, but I'll ask anyway: Do I really need new seals? I have no reason to doubt the old transmission cover's seals, though pulling them might damage them? The replacement cover I've purchased (used, on ebay) also comes with all the seals.

On that topic: Is a new mission cover gasket necessary in these situations? What's the rule with gaskets - get a new one every time you crack the part open? (carbs, crankcase, transmission cover, etc)

The seals and gasket are something like 35 years old. If you want to gamble that's your choice. It's not like you are talking about a bunch of money or anything though.

It's best to replace them. If they aren't broken I use copper high temp silicon. It can still weep sometimes. If the seals are still pliable, they should be good. I wouldn't try to reuse the old ones. If Ness will give them to at a good price, I'd go for it. One less thing to worry about.

Use a new gasket its part of the clearance settings to make it work
right and there cheap.
Seals no way in hell you gonna remove and reuse one much less a
35 year old one with out it leaking.

Does the ball come out on the push-rod side on a 650? It can't on the 550... only rolls out toward the clutch side. The ball is bigger than the rod.

I've read that it will on the 650's but never had my old motor apart just thought I'd mention it just in case.
My GPz motors a pull type clutch and doesn't have a push rod.

Hi all. Just wanted to give a word of thanks to all here that helped. I replaced the broken covers, and that was about it. Had some damage to the clutch release mechanism, but the sprocket cover I had picked up off ebay had the spare parts attached. Along with a new set of oil seals care of Nessism, the bike is back to running.
