Hey Steve, I'm still using the cut strips of 1/16" thick HDPE sheet material behind the hose clamps to hold the rings in. The slick material surface protects the pistons as the sleeves slide past. Besides that, the sleeves engage with the entire 1/16" strip edge, and glide over the rings when the clamps are snugged just right.

I took it up to 25 foot pounds and will go to 30 before startup.
