This did the trick, thank you! I put the forks back in and the bolt came right out once it had pressure on the cylinder.
The first Keihin PE28 came in today. Man, these things are tiny (light).
Back to the stock carbs:
Here's a photo of my mystery. On the lower tube, for the starter yet, there's brass in the tube, but no slot/way of extracting. When I look at the schematic for these, there doesn't appear to be anything in that tube. It looks as if someone took the slow jet from the tube next to it and stuck it in upside down?

I dremeled out the mounting holes to get the manifold to fit centered. Really happy with these.
If anyone needs new boots for their KZ400, I have two more boots I can sell. Just let me know.
The forks from the KZ440 also came in. I wanted to keep my lowers, since I'm retaining the drum brake, but I also wanted the extra height of the KZ440 tubes. I was worried I'd run into a snag, but there isn't. The tubes/springs can be exchanged directly. This adds 1 3/4" of height to the front of the bike.
Downside is that the ebay tubes are slightly bent, so I'll be looking for a refund and sourcing another set. Glad to know that the swap works without issue though.

Seller doesn't want to give a full refund as there are "still usable parts"
Maybe I'll keep the tubes in case I decide to ever try and get the bike airborne ...

I snagged a set of bars from my buddy's CB750K. Just the style I wanted and he's going with clip ons, so free for me. Awesome. Will repaint down the road.
The rear suspension I bought on ebay seems much too stiff for this bike. Must have been on a larger bike. That's disappointing, but I supposed I should have researched that first.
Back to the drawing board for rear shocks..

Photos show the kz440 tubes installed, adding 1.75" up front.
Trying to decide if I should add one or two inches in the back. One would give a little more room between the swingarm and brake pedal mount, but two is doable, and keeps an even lift front and back.
Had to shave down the inside of the passenger peg mounts to get clearance for the swingarm, but I think I'm good to go now.

Any good 14.5" shocks? Dime city has a set for around $90 with the dual springs. Liking those currently.
