Wow, Leon, that look fantastic. i really mean that. great job. i too have struggled with that situation, i suppose everyone with a z has. Need the rack, hate the look. But a custom rack! Now that works!!B)
I bought a stock rack, but have yet to figure out how I can make it go on and off easily. One thing I need to figure out, is what to do with the turn signals , if I use those bolt holes. Do u normally had turn signals on your bike?
Its nice that your wife will go for extended rides with u.
That was another reason for me to ad a rack, WITH a back rest. My wife is not a big fan of riding on the back to start with. I had hoped she would ride more often if I had a back rest. She feels insecure back there, since I have no grab rail or anything. And my personal grab rail just isn’t big enough for 2 hands.

thanks for the compliments mark.
i do not have turn signals on my bike.i use hand signals which is legal in oklahoma(usually with all 5 fingers up :P ).i machined out some pieces that fit into the turn signal holes from the back, and have a small flange around the back side of them to lock them in the hole(and i have countersinks in the backs of them).then i have threaded bungs welded into the luggage rack so that the bolts come through from the backside and used countersunk allen headed bolts to keep a low profile so they stay outta that 190mm tire.they clamp the turn siganl bracket.i plan to build some grab handles that bolt on using the same mounts.z1r's come with one grab handle, but i am wanting two that are symetrical.

my z1r's only had one grab handle.
they dont have the tab on the turn signal bracket for the other side to bolt to only one side has the extra meat on the bracket and the extra hole.i plan to use my luggage rack rear mounting points and will fab two grab handles,to rectify the factory shortcoming/oversight tho.

I'm notorious for spending more money to build things I could just buy. But then I don't learn anything: what's the fun in that?
I was gonna rib you Leon about painting stainless tubing, but I must admit it looks better black on the bike :woohoo:

14 hours of machine work and fab to make a part you can buy for a few bucks does make you wonder about your priorities, .
