1981 KZ1000 K1 Project

hey everyone, just another question as I move on to the next phase here. I pretty much have evrything back together, but now im having some issues with the carbs. now i believe according to my manual i have BS34's? that came with the 81 ltd 998cc J motor. i have 122 (maybe 122.5 cant read them well) mains and 37.5 idle jets. I upgraded to a 1075 kit 10.5-1 CR with pod filters. Where should I be jet wise? I have a feeling im way off. I got the bike to run on cylinders momentarily, but not luck since. Any suggestions? Try 40/140 for the jets. They make a 142.5 and a 145.
I got mine from jeff. I think they are a buck forty each. Roy

Do you think I should go that big on the main jet? I just spoke with z1 and they recommended the 127.5's or 130's? Which direction should I go??? Now I'm not sure what to do!

I'm running a stock motor and pods and a very short silencer.

You could do like i do and order a couple of sets.

I haven't read my plugs latley and i might be rich but it will pull through the red line with the 140's. Dyna coils and ignition. Roy

Do your carbs look like this.(cleaner) Maybe they have the thin chrome tops on the outside carbs?

those carbs sure do look like mine roy! just from memory they may be the same, mine are out in my garage now. Maybe I will just buy 2 sets then! they suggested 40 for pilots asa well, maybe even 42.5's they said

I thought the jets i pulled out of the two stock sets i have had 137.5 mains. I could be wrong as i went through about 20 sets of jets that week.

It was so bad i had to start writing down what jets i had in my bike. Roy

I actually have two sets of carbs. One from my parts bike 81 kz1000k1 and one from the actual project bike 81 kz1000j1 and they had the same jets with the 37.5 pilot and 122 mains so i think that it is correct. thank you though for checking!

Hey everyone, just another question regarding the carbs. I need to know what a good position to start from is on these carbs in regards to the air/fuel screws, the idle set screw and any other variables in the carbs. I need to find a good enough base to get it started up then i can fine tune. Right now, I just want suggestions on a good starting place.

I went with 130 mains and 40 pilots on my 1981 kz1000k1. 1075cc 10.5-1 with BS34's I believe.

I have been trying unsuccessfully for a day or 2. hopefully if i get time i can try this tonight. i have the air/fuel screws set at 1.5 turns out and the idle set screw i have almost completely backed off. Thanks!

well forgot that for tonight...

I went home on lunch break and did a compression test and have 0-0-0-130. Soooo I'm a little befuddled. I just did valve clearances. I had 0-0-0-90 before correcting the clearances. I'll try a leakdown test and see where i'm losing all of my compression. This is disheartening after a lengthy rebuild.

I know it could be a million things, but any suggestions?
