Plummen-

Hopefully I can add to the confusion:)
The build date is 3-76
Frame # 508889 (On the sticker and stamped in steering head)
Engine# 106443 (I'm guessing the engine was changed at some point but I don't know for sure)

Like I said the title I have say's it's a 76 also so I don't have a clue-

Maybe these numbers will clear something up for you (and then for me too, now I'm pretty curious)

Thanks
Ben

So I decided to attack the battery box and electronics next. I need to throw in here that I am notoriously cheap and am trying to use everything I can off of the zx10:) . I was mocking up where I wanted to put everything when I saw this sitting in the corner of the garage-

I kind of held it up in place and decided I might be able to make it work. If I could it would solve two problems at once; where to put the battery and what to do for a rear fender up under the tail since I wasn't re-using the stock chrome one. After a LOT of cutting and grinding, I decided it would probably work so I set about mounting the electronics around it. I realized the easiest thing to do would be to cut the side of the stock battery box that hold's the electronics off and re-use it because it also has the lower mount for the left sidecover built into it. So I cut it off and started building a way to mount it up. Here is what I came up with-

So now with everything mounted up here is what I ended up with-

I think it ought to work out pretty good. I still need to go back and finish welding everything once I get the frame stripped and I can get to the underside a little better. As a bonus, I even have room behind the right sidecover now to build a little storage box if I'm feeling really motivated. Next up, rearset mounting (using the zx10 pieces if I can, of course:) )
Until next time,

Ben

Hello all-

I had to put the bike back together and put it down on the ground so I could get a better idea of where to put my footpegs-thought I'd post a quick pic of what it looks like.-

Using the zx10 wheels makes for a unique (though I'm not a 100% sold on it yet:) ) look because it has 17" front and 18" rear rim where most sportbikes people are using for swaps have 17" front and rear rims. Like I said I'm still up in the air about the final look but I'm sure I'll still end up running them because I already have them and I don't feel like buying 2 new rim's:S

Just thought I'd give an update for the two of you that are following this build:) I decided to get my footpegs in order. I really wanted to use the whole footpeg mounting assembly off of the zx10 but that just wasn't working so I decided to use as much off of them as I could. The left side wasn't too bad, I just had to shorten the linkage rod and cut and reweld the mount that hooks onto the shifter arm on the bike-

The right side was a little trickier because I had to build a pivot for the zx10 brake lever, a mount for a return spring, and a mount for the m.c., as well as shortening the m.c. push rod-

I also had to put some passenger pegs on, or my fiance would kill me:) After some ebay searching, I found these for $15 shipped-

They are off of a 90 fzr600. I liked the fact that they were steel so I could weld them onto the frame, they had the newer style footpegs, they matched the kindof "classic/modern" theme I was going for, and the pass. side already has an exhaust mount hole on it. And they were dirt cheap-yes!

Here is the pass. side one tacked on-

I still need to strip the frame down and finish welding everything. Just bought a hobart handler 187 on black friday and it is awesome! Sure beats the crappy 110v lincoln I've been using so I will be going back over everything. Getting closer everyday, it just might be ready by spring!

"or my fiance would kill me"...hahahahaha, No doubt!

I still have to do the same... Wife came out last week and asked where do I put my feet?....   Oops!

I quickly replied we still have to purchase those honey for I need to get the Kerker on so we know what we'll need in hardware for your foot rest... She just smiled.... whistle:

That was a close one....

I like the ingenuity of how you did the rear sets and passenger pegs... Good thinking!

Thanks for the compliments omr- I really didn't want to put passenger pegs on it but she really likes to ride and this is my only bike right now so..... she won:)

I'll be honest with ya, I've been following your project regularly and it is AWESOME! I just realized I don't think I've posted on yours yet- everything looks gorgeous-job very well done!

Okay guys and gals, I've been horrible about updating this the last few months so here goes-

I decided to make some frame braces patterned off of others work on this site and others( sorry it's already painted, I forgot to take pics before I painted it:)

For the top one here I decided to do something a little different. I was going to make three pieces to triangulate the top three tubes like others have done until I mocked it up and they hit my tank no matter where I put them. Intead I took one piece of tube, notched the top middle at an angle for the top tube, and notched both ends on the bottom for the bottom two tubes, I hope it works out ok:)

I blasted the whole frame with a homeade sandblaster I made, then primed and painted it with dupont imron 3.5, which is a really durable commercial finish.

Here's a shot without the motor

And one with

Now it's just a matter of putting it all back together and painting the bodywork. I still need to figure out what to do for a front fender. I tried to cut the zx10 one down and butchered it pretty bad. I got a new front tire ready to put on and a pretty trick hyd. clutch setup in the works. Sorry again for the long delay in posting:)
