Replied by galaxian on topic kz to zx7 conversion part1

Last night i welded a bead between ZX7 and KZ stem as an added bit of security.

The calipers are unfortunatly chromed. They came with the forks so i had no say in what they look like. It is a little too much bling for my taste.

The head bearings should be in within a few days and i will test fit these on the frame i have laying around.
Once again Z1 enterpries come through.

The rear is a whole other issue at the moment seeing as i am determined to fit a 6" wide rear wheel into a space that is not designed for such. As a side note for those KZ650 guys thinking about doing this conversion. A 4.5" rim will fit into a Suzuki GS swingarm with no problems. If you want a wider wheel to run a wider tire you will need a swingarm upgrade and an offset sproket. I will post more pics of these later.

I will post more pics as the parts come in.

Steell: Thanks for the search links and tip.

I think I have figured my problems out ! I hope I'm right !

I went to bikebandit.com and looked at their diagrams and figured I do need the GS1100 swingarm bushing sleeves, end caps, thrust washer.

Well, I bought a swingarm, and Today I tried to fit it up on my bike. And it looks like I'm missing some stuff !

I thought the swingarm bearings were the right ID for the KZ900 piviot bolt. So, Do I need pivot bolt sleeves for the GS1100 swingarm ? Are they suppose to have them ? I put my KZ900 sleeves in and it wasnt the right size - too small.

Also the spacing between the frame and swingarm is alot, looks like almost 1/2" of play. So, I'm thinking I need swingarm end caps for the GS1100 swingarm ?

I didnt get any other parts with the swingarm.. just the swingarm with bearings in it and the brake stay bar. Also there is a long bushing trapped inside the swingarm, also not a tight fit on the KZ900 pivot bolt.

Where can I get the parts I need ? Thanks for any help !

Thanks gang. Wireman, you definitely know of what you speak! Gotta love a good row of nickels on any metal. My Dad spent over 40 years with his face under a welding mask. I learned a little from him when it comes to laying down a good solid bead that also looks purrrrdy.

I had a chat with the machinist and the boxed aluminum or chrome moly design would have been nice but the price would have probably come in around what a new crotch rocket swingarm would have set me back.

I am probably going to have an underside swingarm brace made of mild steel tubing slightly smaller than the factory swingarm diameter with several pencil-sized triangulated braces kinda like the ladder bars I had for my '70 Chevelle SS.

Until we fab it up I can't guess its weight but it should come in under 5 pounds. I have a friend who put a similar one on his Z1r and he said he didn't even know it was there.

Whatever you say chief. I've made my point. No one said you guys can't disagree, but the fact is that the best and safest way for this problem to be solved is to use the proper triple trees.

Here's a better question... why isn't the thread starter just getting the correct trees and running them instead of shimming?

Interesting read, this post. Guess my question is, IF you need to re-locate electrices do put a mono-shock on a 900/1000, where do you move them TOO?? I think it was sbjones that his juuuuuuuust cleared the battery tray. Have looked at and studied on mine, but sure dont look like they's much room in there.
But good luck on yer mod, and keep them pictures coming!!

yeah like I said in my first post. I wasnt too familiar with monoshock setups. But I am pointed in the right direction now.

Seeing the stock pic helps a lot. I didnt have anything to go on brfore, every other pic I found had the lower fairing covering the linkage.

One thing you might want to do is go to a dealership and just bring your digi cam and take some pics of any angles you want.
