I am doing a garage bob of a 1979 kz 750 twin. Most of my mechanical knowledge is electrical so there are certain things that I just dont have the answers too. I welded on a hardtail to my bike and it is looking awesome, but am having problems using the stock wheel and axle. My issue is that with the swingarm now out there is way too much space between the axle plates so the wheel slides a few inches back and forth. Anyone with help would be great? Maybe a spacer? I dont know

Personally Im just a :woohoo: sucker a sucker for old tech dinosaur stuff like dual shocks!

I am thinking I might agree with you, plus the guy only wants $20 for the GSXR swingarm

The first swingarm is from a 99 gsxr 600 it would be a better fit for your kz frame, just 2 pivot bolt reducer spacers and weld some shock mounts and your good.

I prefer the looks of the suzuki arm myself, and I know theyre really close dimension wise in pivot area so they just need shims.

This is a late 90s gsxr 750 arm I modified for one of my turbo projects with 3" extensions and dual shock mounts built into them before welding B)

I found 2 swingarms on craigslist for cheap, only question I have is which one would be better to get? One from a 02 GSXR or one from a 07-08 CBR 600 RR? I have pics of both and your help would be greatly appreciated before I buy something I can't use. I would prefer to get the CBR on because it comes with the shock, just not sure if it would work with my 82 KZ750N

First, I was able to find a great machinist, who whittled a half inch off the sprocket side of the carrier. The sprocket studs are going to need to have a little trimmed off, but I can spin the wheel without hitting the swingarm as it is, just want a little more clearance.

Second, I drilled the upper triple for my risers, and got the All Balls races driven in. Looks like it's all going to bolt together perfectly. I still need to grease the bearings.

Third, I'm negotiating with my wife right now on the purchase of a welder :) . I'm gathering frame bracing info and will start gathering the materials that I need soon. If the welder falls through, I may get the plates and tubing fitted, then take it all to my brother's house and have him weld it.

I'm going to get some pics taken and posted tomorrow, hopefully I can get a lot done this weekend.

Happy to be active here again. Safe riding!!
maybe this will give you some ideas on frame bracing B)

I'm new for this site and I read all of this project. Cool stuff! So I try some parts on my KZ650LTD. It is GSXR front end, bolt rite on like its made for it. In back some Ninja swing arm and it need bushing bore bolt and about 1/4" spacers on sides, between frame and swing arm. Than going to weld tabs on sides for two shocks which going to be from ZRX.

Looking good!

Haybus wrote: That looks like you're machining a modern steering stem? But you were talking about swing arm mods? Do you need some bushings made? I thought you were putting in a big beast of a swinger in your build.

Doesn't everyone have a lathe in their garage? They should. Just tell your wife it's insurance in case the vacuum, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. breaks (true story, all 3 have been resurrected with emergency lathe service). I can't imagine trying to mod one of these machines without a mill and lathe. Kudos to the folks that make nice looking stuff with bandsaws and grinders.

Ya I am using that beast still. I thought why not salvage the R1 steering stem since I am not using it and cut it for the swingarm bushing. :side:

I agree you cant do these builds without having access to a lathe and a mill.
You can do it,you just need to be good with a drill and a file! :woohoo:
There was a guy named lil john buttera that pretty much built an indy car in a 1 car garage with a belt sander ,drill press and a bunch of basic hand tools! B)
