Looks like it's just off the factory assembly line. Only better! Good show!

Some parts can be baked in the oven at home(it might make a smell, so open the windows if possible)300-350 F for about 1 hour will make a durable paint job. I use short hooks made from wire coat hangers, with the parts to be baked suspended from the oven racks.

Items like engine covers and the sprocket cover can be baked, just remove any seals or pieces that can by damaged by heat(wires, & rubber parts).

The PJ-1 "Fast Black" is a close match to the black paint used on some of the Kawasaki engines.

-Great looking engines gwolver, & Austin

-Nice bike Martin

The best way to paint crankcases/blocks/heads is to powder coat or Gun Kote them IMO. Using an oven will make them last alot longer. There is way too much work envolved to strip an engine to have to redo them.

Mfolks, do you really use your house oven to cure your parts in? Wow! Maybe I misread your post.

It is all off frame. Engine covers removed and polished.

I noticed that PJ1 on the Z1 site. Supposed to be close to factory type paint. Might try that for the black.

Thanks.

VHT Engine Metallic or VHT Caliper paint in the silver color works excellently for engines. It cures to a super durable finish after the engine is run the first time. Follow the directions on the can.

So, anyone that has painted their engine & the finish has lasted

Did you.....
1/ Use an Etch primer?
2/ Did you bake your parts (& is this necessary?)

The reason i ask no 2 is because if im painting a complete engine i won't find an oven big enough, can a heat gun cure the paint?

I used gun kote on my engine cases. It has yet to see any road time, but from just scraping at it with a screwdriver it seems pretty durable. I had the cases mediablasted with a 50/50 mix of granite and glass bead. No etch primer. Shot it, and baked it for 2 hours.

I would be very cautious if using a heat gun to cure the paint, as heat guns are primarily used in the removal of paint. if you have a decent heat gun it can get to 1200+ degrees, which would probably be enough to burn the gun kote. I just picked up a crappy oven on craiglist for $20, works great. If you don't have room for an oven, you could probably find a smaller powdercoating shop and see if they would let you cure your parts in their oven.

Also if you do use the gun kote, be aware that the black and green have lead in them. So probably don't wanna do that in the house... or be anywhere around the fumes...

Thanks for the advice! As im doing my engine complete & its a bit heavy to throw about i'll need to do it in house so i'll need to use my heat gun, it has a variable setting so i'll see what maximum & minimum is & set it somewhere that scales about right.
