Could someone tell me how thick the rear brake pads are supposed to be on a 78 Kawa 750 twin? any link to where I can get a set? Also how do I remove the caliper to replace them?? Thanks..JC

can you post a picture of your caliper?

Just two bolts with nuts on the back side, one bolt retaining the back side pad.

Don't know the specific thickness but if one pad is a lot thinner than the other then replace. If they are about an 1/8" thick I'd replace, pads are cheap, hospitals are expensive.

Put the socket on the nut on the inside of the caliper. On mine ('78 750 twin), I was stupid and tried to use a wrench on the front of the caliper, then I noticed that the bolt head would not turn all the way around, because of the design of the caliper. It did nothing but scratch the paint:angry:. THEN I noticed that there was room for a socket on the back side!

OK..Got the link, thanks.........I took out the two bolts on the caliper then the two nuts. I thought the caliper would come right off but it didn't. Seems like the caliper piston is getting hug up on the front mounting bracket.(there's a hole where I think the pad goes). Is there a way to get the caliper off? Is it possible the piston is expaneded to far & it's frozen? I didn't see any brake pads,they must be really small..... Can anyone help me out with this rear brake change??

I'm at a loss for what you are referring to??

Once you take the bolts that hold the two halve together to the frame it should have just fell in to two pieces. I guess it is time for photos.

You should have removed bolt#14 and nut#2.

The pads are #9 & #10.

I think the rear caliper is a single peice. Take out the two bolts that hold it to the bracket and it should just slide off.

yeah thats a front caliper used on rear .open the bleeder valve and put a hose on it to direct brake fluid into empty can or something then slide caliper towards drivers side this should force the piston back into caliper.then remove the 2 bolts and roll or pull caliper off of bracket.then blead brakes when you are finished reinstalling caliper. goodluck,happy wrenching!

Great a picture.... I took out the bolts (#14) & the nuts (#2) with no luck. Do I also have to remove the phillips head screw (#6)the washer (7)& 8 to remove the inner pad? Should the outer pad(10) fall right out? Seems like the caliper piston is getting stuck in the circular part in the Y shaped bracket (where the pads ride)maybe that's the pad that's getting stuck.Sorry but I've never done this on a bike before only a car........ Would it help if a took a pic ot two??...JC
