I had a buddy that did that back in the day on his Z1. However I don't know what kind he used, nor did I see his setup. But I do know it worked. I've seen it mentioned here before but I wouldn't have a clue what thread it might have been.

I'm dating myself by admitting to familiarity with this but, here goes.

There was an aluminum points plate in the Z1/KZ1000 day that used GM points that were riveted to the plate. I don't remember who made/marketed it. Only adjustments were for points gap and overall timing by rotating the entire plate. These were the GM points that had a hex socket screw for adjusting dwell. When these points were installed in a GM distributor, the dwell was adjusted through a little window on the distributor cap that had a cover that slid open vertically, so a hex wrench could be inserted into the dwell adjusting screw on the points. Dwell was adjusted with the motor running while observing a dwell meter. We still have an 18" Blue Point flexible hex tool in the ignition tool drawer purpose made for the task. Overall spark timing was done by rotating the entire distributor.

Interesting concept, but I never bought into that device. Not enough flexibility. Looked like a gimmick.

Slinjim: I have the same tool for adjusting points that you must have. Lots and lots of points were adjusted with that tool. Worked way better than a stupid old allen wrench. I always thought the way GM did their early points with the window in the distributor cap was far easier than Ford or Mopar. Took longer to hook up the tach and dwell meter than to adjust the points in a GM car with the distributor window. Great feature when one worked on comission.

Thank you Rick and slmjim for the trip down memory lane. I do remember those although never used one of my own. Ahhh yes the good ole days!

I am surprised you never saw/used that GM distributor point adjustment thru the distributor cap. GM used that style of point adjustment for at least 15 years I think and it worked great at the time. Fords did not use the window in the distributor cap and were a pain to adjust. You had to hook up a remote start button and pull the cap and rotor off then crank the engine over with the starter button while adjusting point gap at the same time. Then put it all back together and check your dwell running at idle. Most often it was off and bit because cranking dwell was different from actual running dwell and you had to go back and re-do it. The GM window in the cap saved all that baloney. Then the manufacturers made things better with electronic ignition components and life was good until something went kaput! Think early Mopar "Lean Burn Engine" technology with the engine computer mounted on the air cleaner. What a great idea.....What could possibly happen to a computer module mounted on the air cleaner????

P.S. Now imagine how easy it would be to adjust the points in a Kawasaki if they would have used the adjustment screw idea GM used?

I do remember that tool and concept in cars although i never used one myself. I knew of it through friends working on their cars. What i never saw was how those points were used in a bike. Thanks for the informative insight.
