I had my engine rebuilt by Zack at Zack's Cycle in Milan, MI about 10 years ago. Cost me $3600, weisco 1075 kit, and cut trans. He told me when it was all done that was the last one they would ever do.

Trout, that is indeed a favorable price. But that was, as mentioned, a decade ago. Used to get those Wiseco K1015, 45 and 75's for around 400bucks back at that time. Now they want 700-850USD for basically the same thing. And a "restore" is a whole different bird then a re-build. Inflation, it sucks, ha.

My recent build is a 1197cc Z1 engine, with ported and big valved head, .425" RC cams, welded crank, and VM33 smooth bores. With the carbs and the oil cooler/lines it cost me about $4200 Canadian (~$2930 USD)
The price is a little low because the pistons were used. The most expensive purchased parts were the LA sleeves at $560. The head cost $750 to port and big valve (includes used 37/31 SS valves) and the cylinder boring was $500 (+6 mm over)
I could have built a 1015 engine for a lot less but I already had the 76mm MTC's.

And I think it depends on what internally needs replaced. Have yall seen the cost on OEM geared/rubber cam chain tension wheels ?!?!
I think I have 3k in parts alone on my current build. A Wiseco Piston set is over $700 before taxes! - Sleeves, (bore work for jugs and sleeves is getting costly too)... HD cylinder studs, crank studs and support plates, oil gates, clutch kits, cam chains and all their wheels/guides - Most head rebuilds cost near 1k after parts are included (New valves, springs, shims, seals ) - and all the little bits that are necessary and fall under the category of "While I am in here...."
it gets spendy and is only going up in cost.

I made the crank support plate, pretty easy. I also made a oil gate for the oil pan plus a roller clutch pusher and cam chain tensioner. By making these parts I saved quite a bit of cash, have more time than money
My motor had never been apart so I reused all the crank case bolts and stock cylinder studs. You only need the APE parts if its a race engine (going to be taken apart often) Those parts have skyrocketed in the last couple of years!
I tried to keep costs down but you can only do it on some parts, not all parts. You don't need all the APE parts for a NA street bike, dudes have been drag racing Z1's since 1973 without those parts.
