What color did you want to paint it: black?  If so, research using a propane plumbing torch and recondition it that way.

I seem to recall people doing that to turn grey and weathered plastic back to black, but I don't know if that will help here unless the OP sands off absolutely all of the old paint that the PO applied

I thought it was a joke! It seems to work, but I wouldn't have the courage to do it these air box are kind of rare.

I tried a heat-resistant paint, gas, and oil that seemed to have an acceptable finish on the can but ultimately was too matte. (Rust-Oleum, High Heat).

Sand it back to bare plastic using a fine grade wet and dry. Then go over it with 2000 wet and dry then polish it with paint restorer  polish.
You'll get a high gloss black plastic finish. Once done give it a wax with graphene wax.
I do scabby 80's indicators back to new looking this way.

Kaw-boy 900 post=914599 userid=81101I tried a heat-resistant paint, gas, and oil that seemed to have an acceptable finish on the can but ultimately was too matte. (Rust-Oleum, High Heat).
Rust-Oleum brand is the worst paint to use, they have some kind of oil in the mix to achieve the rust proofing aspect so any paint over it has to be the same of else you will have adhesive issues. Lots of choices at Canadian Tire or NAPA/Car Quest in rattle can paint beside the rust paint.

I painted one air box years ago and used a black gloss enamel formulated for plastic. To do it right there are also primers formulated for plastic as well.

A friend who recently restored a scratched up KZ650 air box sanded his to 1500 grit as suggested by others. For me after seeing his and mine I would do my next one by sanding.

You might be right, I applied 3 layers of paint and it seemed okay. I added a ceramic spray from Auto GLYM that gives a nice finish, but I noticed that the paint reacted strangely on top. Maybe I was too generous or did not let it dry enough between layers.I will try again the next time I remove the carburetors, but in the meantime, at 100 miles per hour... it's not that bad !
