Thanks.  I think I'll get a telescopic mirror as suggested and take a better look.  Does electrolysis leave the zinc coating intact?

I have read that phosphoric acid mixed with water to a specified % is a good option as it leaves a zinc coating for better protection where Evapo Rust removes it.

Both will eat off the zinc.  Not to worry, though, because the tank has no zinc.  It's just the petcock, sending unit, cap, things like that, which should be removed regardless.

Thanks. I've been reading lots of other posts on this Nessism by you. Great info. The paint on this tank is beautiful and if I do this I don't want to f it up. The phosphoric acid seems like the most effective option  but for my situation I get the sense Evapo Rust will be safer as it should not harm the paint. If there is no zinc coating to worry about as you say
, is there any draw back with Evapo Rust on the short or long term ie will it be rust free for just as long with proper care?

Hello Gd4now,

Washing soda is commonly used for electrolysis.

It is sometimes called washing soda, it just needs to have sodium carbonate in it. Keep in mind this is not the fastest way to remove rust from inside the tank but it does work well.

An inexpensive option is vinegar. It will not work on heavy rust, but on light surface rust, it works fine.

We have done many tanks with EvapoRust. Once it's done go straight to a rinse with diesel which also coats the tank to prevent flash rust. Pour in about a gallon and shake. Pour the diesel into a gallon milk jug and watch the sludge settle. Pour the diesel back in and dump the sludge. On rusty tanks sometimes I make a mop with a rag and attached to a length of coat hanger so I can bend to wipe excess sludge from the corners. Repeat several times until satisfied. The diesel coating won't hurt a thing when you fill up with gas.

This works very well on sludge, dried crud and very light rust.

Thanks. When you say go straight to diesel for a rinse, to confirm then you are bypassing a  rinse with water per the Evaporust instructions?

Yes I bypass the water rinse. The last thing I want to do is put water in a freshly derusted tank.
