Seat paint/dye, black?
23 Oct 2019 05:01
Years ago Mar Hyde was a very good seat paint/dye. It is no longer produced. Anyone use something they are happy with?

Eastwood restoration supplies.
Or
TCP global.
They both carry items.
I used Mar Hyde urethane primer for years! A gallon lasted me about 10 years doing bikes only.

Any idea how vinyl spray coatings in the rattle-cans compare to the dyes?
SEM has marine vinyl coatings & they have a video spraying an inflatable dingy.
I've also seen videos of Duplicolor vinyl & fabric coating and it looks pretty durable. Thanks.

I've got a half-empty aerosol of black vinyl spray. I don't know what brand it is, but I can check. I've used it on one seat cover, and I was disappointed. It's applied in several thin coats, and the stuff never seemed to dry. It didn't stain my clothes or anything, but it was just unpleasant to touch. It also looked tacky - too shiny, in a bad way. Maybe it's because of the humid atmosphere we have here, but it stayed sticky, and hot weather seemed to worsen it. In retrospect it was a bad choice - it would have been better to use stretchy seat vinyl to recover the seat.

Are you starting from scratch/changing colors or trying to make a previously-black seat black again?
I used Meguiar's Ultimate Black plastic/vinyl/rubber protector stuff to bring a sun-faded (grey) old Yamaha seat back to a nice shiny black.
The packaging states it shouldn't be used on bicycle or motorcycle seats, but I'm not in any danger of sliding off the back.

Yep, just want a dull faded black seat back to a little shine.

Be careful. Many years ago when I first learned how to ride a motorcycle I learned on a friend's Honda CB160. He had treated the seat with something that was very pretty but oh so slick, and I almost slid off the seat the first time I rode it! Knowing how little power that bike had taught me not to use anything on the KZ650 seat that would make it slippery. Ed

Nothing to worry about. I've used armor all on seats since it was invented. I like to move around.

When I was a kid, working in a bicycle shop, we would armor-all a customer's seat if they were rude. They always liked how shiny it made them.

Try a basic shoe polish. That should work. (As with most methods,I would try a small area first and see how it comes up)

Tried the Meguiers Ultimate. Didn't do what I wanted.
