77 KZ900 Seat Replacement
10 Feb 2019 10:05 - 10 Feb 2019 10:07
Hello fellow KZers. I’ve been the proud owner of a 77 kz900 for half my life now. I’m 32. I love my vintage stuff and take pride in owning something old that you can work on and I’m blessed to have many things like this! I have used the site several times over the years for varying issues, and appreciate the knowledge base presented here. I have something I’m a little stumped by and I haven’t figured it out.
My bike has the old HUGE two seater seat. It never bothered me, but it’s getting very cracked up and pathetic looking. I’m looking to replace it with something more low profile to give it a sleeker look. My seat measures about 28 inches long. The seats I’m finding to replace that say “it fits” are about 21” long. Will these actually work or am I missing something? Let me know what you think and if I can provide more information to help answer my question. This bike had aftermarket fairings and windshield, and saddle bags etc. it was set up to be a cruiser. Is it possible that the fender was replaced to allow for these items and as such the seat was larger?
Thanks for reading!

I have an old seat like that, and I compared the seat pan with a step seat pan and their the same. I rebuilt my seat and used the old foam because even the old foam is superior to the kit foam you can buy, also I used marine Naugahyde as it is 2x thicker. If the seat latch and hinges haven't been altered or is not a universal set up I would bet you have the same as I. Im like swest ,,, the older I get the wider I get but my ass gets narrower!! that is why I've bought a corbin. Best on the market IMHO.
If you don't have pics it didn't happen!!

Any seat from '73 to at least '80 will fit, but one from '76 onward would also have the correct latch.
If your seat pan is still in good shape you may just want to buy a new skin and use your existing foam to fill it.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationZ1parts has a decent replacement @ $190
z1parts.net/complete-seat-w-belt-kz900-kz1000/
If you're on a budget you can't go wrong with this one For $100, has a few scuffs and has provisions for kz seat latch

Snapped these of the seat situation real quick. Sorry for the crappy light sun was shinin thru. I’ll get some more flattering pics sometime I get a chance.
Gregz, I’m going to consider the eBay seat and the one from z1 parts thanks for that.
So what’s up with these 21” jobs on eBay that say they fit? I think one from z1 enterprises was like that too if I remember right (it’s been a while on that one). Thoughts?
Thanks everyone for the replies!

The seat pan looks fine. Foam too. You should be able to just buy a new skin and replace the old one.

I think 76 was the last year for the KZ900 and all the 77's were KZ1000?
