How do you put on universal mufflers?
16 Apr 2017 20:53
Hello guys! So I bought a pair of reverse megaphone mufflers. I am trying to install them and then wrap it up with exhaust wrap. But I have a little problem. The reducers that came with the mufflers are too loose even with the clamp tighen. How does one connect the universal muffler to the exhaust? Does anybody have a solution to this problem?

Go to your local auto parts supply. They should have a shiny aluminized exhaust repair tape. Wrap it around the end of your pipes to take up the difference between the pipes and the bushings. If you are careful it wont be seen. I've done it on my improvised set up and it works great and is less of a pain than trying to find properly fitting purpose made bushings and gaskets.

Normally the person making the purchase would check the OD of the existing pipe and then check the ID of the mufflers to ensure a good fit.
The OD should be as close as possible to the ID without being equal to or greater than the ID. This will eliminate the need to fill the gap.
For example, I bought a pair of used headers and a set of new mufflers for my KZ400. The OD of the header is about 1.48" so I bought mufflers with a 1.5" ID. The pieces fit together well and will require only an exhaust clamp. (Do not use a hose clamp for this.)
OD = outer diameter
ID = inner diameter

Go to an auto parts store and buy the correct exhaust reducer and 2 band clamps.

Ok I got the mufflers on, Thank the heavens! But now I am about to wrap the exhaust with exhaust wrap. Which side do you wrap the exhaust? Do you start from the muffler side and wrap up to the engine end? Or vice versa?

Perhaps. :lol: [hr]
The pipe you show in your pic looks like it is in good shape, so I though you might want to see what pipe wrap will do to the finish. Ed
