Rustoleum Crystal Clear?
16 Dec 2016 01:35
Does anyone have any experience with this stuff. Im looking at it to clearcoat my tank and tail. Is it petrol proof ? will it cover on acrylic top coat? Is it buffable? Im also looking for something for the engine side cases. Is this stuff heat resistent?
Any information appreciated.Thanks.

Never heard of it. I use Spraymax 2K for fuel tanks. Is the Rustoleum 2 part?

If it doesn't come in the special 2-part can, then it probably isn't fuel proof.

Rustoleum falls into the bubble gum class of paints. It sprays out nicely for a rattle can and all but don't expect it to hold up to heat, chemicals, or abrasion.

Do not waste anymore time looking or talking.
GET Spraymax 2K!!
Not hard to use... yes a bit harder to wet sand and buff to a fine polish.... but I've spilled gas a couple times on mine and all it does is melt off the wax coating. Rewax the Spraymax 2K and buff.. just like new again.

Thanks for the input. I have found a local source for Spraymax 2k. The main question is,will it go on acryllic based topcoat??

From their tech info application section on the 2k clear page:
Solvent and water-diluted basecoat systems after drying according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Old paint, cleaned and sanded
I would contact them just to make certain. and of course make sure the new basecoat paint is fully cured
before spraying the 2k stuff.

I called spraymax today and explained that I wanted to clearcoat on top of acrylic paint. They reckon that with a very thin misting for a tack coat,I might get away with it! Hmmmmmmm! Thats a big maybe. I told them the brand of paint that I was using and they poo-pooed it. Not as good quality as their paint! Of course.
Anyway, looking into this stuff, it does look very good. I havent found any negative reactions to it and they do next day delivery.
A big risk though if it reacts badly with the base coat!!!!!
What to do,What to do.............?

Do you know any bodyshop guys? They might know if a urethane can be sprayed over acrylic-lacquer.

You can't blame the Spraymax for lack of compatibility with acrylic's. They are not designed for that. Basecoats are typically almost like lacquer; once the solvent evaporates out they are ready for clearcoat. Acrylic's are totally different.

Re: Rustoleum Crystal Clear?
19 Dec 2016 11:41 - 19 Dec 2016 11:43I have sprayed it over acrylic lacquer many times....martin_csr wrote: Do you know any bodyshop guys? They might know if a urethane can be sprayed over acrylic-lacquer.
As long as the acrylic lacquer is fully cured.
If it is already cured and rather glossy, wet sand the acrylic lacquer with at least a 1200-1500 grit wet and dry paper first.
Make the old finish look dull but very smooth.
Clean the living bejesus out of the old finish after this and wipe it with a CLEAN tack cloth.
One light but well covering thin'ish coat of Spraymax 2K followed by a nice thick coat with NO RUNS a little later.
Then let it dry and cure... depending on temparture this could be a while.
After, break out the wet and dry 1500 paper for the hard part.
After that I usually do one more coat of clear and super wet 1500 sanding rounds.
Finish up with 2500 to 3000 wet and dry paper... almost looks glossy then but still satin like.
Then get GOOD quality paint polish, NOT rubbing compound.
You should be able to polish with a good quality polishing rag but if you know how to use a bufffing wheel..... that is much faster.
Below is a weekend project tank using this method....
Total investment, including the tail piece and side covers was around $42.00

Thanks. Your method is basically the same way I did a fuel tank using only acrylic-lacquers. For the last step I used Meguiar's mirror glaze swirl remover to polish the final coat. It came out nice but wasn't fuel proof. doh. .... green tank in photo. the blue tank was done at an auto body shop pro bono.
