Kz1000 tail on a 750ltd
27 Feb 2016 21:08
I picked up a tail piece from a kz1000. I'd like to fit it to my 82 kz750, which is an ltd (H) model. The piece actually fits good on the frame, although I'll need to weld some tabs on to be able to bolt it down. My issue is going to be seat fitment. I know I can't use the 1000 seat pan because the 750 frame has a kink in it. I was thinking the pan from the 750 E might work. Thoughts?
Here's some pictures of how the tail piece sits on the frame:

Maybe a J pan or make your own out of fiberglass? I have one and will take a pic in the morning.

Looks a bit long to me.Sticking out too much.Better to be sure about it before you fork out more money on the seat.Have you got a full on side view photo of the whole bike?

The 750E seat is probably the best match for the frame, but I have no idea how it'll fit a different plastic tail cover. the one in the pic does look rather large. maybe that's just an optical illusion?

Now that's it's light I took some shots of the J pan and my Z1 seat. You'll notice the J pan has a raised curve in the frone, is stepped in the middle and squared in the back. It is also longer that the Z1/KZ seats.

Wow thanks swest! That helps a lot.
Anyone have a picture of the 750E seat pan?
The tail section is a bit long for the bike, and the short 16" tire may have something to do with that. If I decide to use it, I'll probably end up shortening it a few inches.

My 1980 750E1 is under a winter cover at the moment but I took the following photos and measurements a few years back for another KZR member. Let me know if you need more measurements and I'll get the bike out.

The round tail will be the deal breaker. I like the concept though. "I knew he would."

I'd get a used KZ 900/100 seat to put on there. Might have to make up some hinges.

I picked up a kz1000 seat pan. It's a little too long. I've got a 750 E pan on the way. I'll see how it fits around the tail, but I'm thinking the best solution will be to cut and weld the rear section of the 1000 pan to the E pan.
I though about just getting the 750 E tail to make this easy, but there is something about the 1000 tail that I just like. Gives the bike that "ass in the air" look.

Re: Kz1000 tail on a 750ltd

I think I got it figured out. The 750E pan didn't work out. It fits the frame well, but it's too long for the tail section and too short for the LTD tank.
It's actually the same length as the 1000 pan
After some measuring and a few stiff drinks, I figured out the 1000 pan would bolt on if I shortened it a little. I was able to use some of the parts from the LTD pan on the 1000 pan to get it to pretty much "bolt on". I moved the front hinge bracket of the 1000 pan to the rear, and used the front hinge bracket from the LTD pan. I had to move the LTD bracket rearward and use only one bolt on the 1000 pan. This aligned to the hinges on the frame perfectly. The problem I had after that was the length of the 1000 pan would not allow it to close on the frame. My solution was to cut and bend the front of the pan. This allowed me to close it. Once it was closed, I realized that it fit perfectly with the tail piece.
The seat latch from the LTD pan aligned with one of the bolt holes on the 1000 pan. I had to use a couple nuts to space it properly.
The rear rubber supports on the 1000 pan don't line up with the 750 frame. The front one does. I came up,with this solution to allow a height adjustment of the rear support.
After all that, it fits. Here is the final result:
I'll have to modify the side of the pan slightly to follow the lines of the 750 frame and to fit well with the side panels. I'll also have to cut the front of the pan off to fit the tank.
