Brake calipers - special paint needed?

Getting ready to paint my front brake calipers. Do I need to worry about using a special high temp paint? Looking to do black semi-gloss. Thanks.

You will want a high temp paint. There is caliper specific paint made as well. If you want something that will withstand brake fluid check out KG coatings, Gun Kote. Some members on here have painted their whole engine as well with that stuff.

I have been using POR-15 gloss black top coat on all my calipers for awhile now and been really happy with it. Been also using it on all my engine cases, very tough stuff and looks great.

Thanks for all the feedback. I see Autozone sells a caliper specific paint. I'm going to try it out.

FWIW. I painted my Fr Br caliper w DupliColor brake caliper spray paint & baked the parts in the oven to cure. Although the paint has held up well, the brake fluid has ruined it around the bleeder nipple.

I bought the VHT caliper paint last night. Part of the instructions call to bake in the oven at 200 degrees for 1 hour for proper curing. My only concern is I did not remove the seals or dust boots as they are in good condition and I did not want to disturb them. Am I still ok to bake at this temp or will it melt/ruin the seals? Thanks.

it will ruin the seals, remove them or better yet replace them after there cured after you removed them pre bake.

I would take it apart spray it down with brake cleaner and scrub it real good with soap and water followed by rubbing alcohol then a lite sanding and more rubbing alcohol then paint and bake .

worked for me ;)

Nice Looking! Great job! And, to think all I did was follow JD's procedure: brake cleaner, sand, alcohol, fine grit sand, alcohol. Except, I simply used flat black Krylon on the repaint! :silly: It is holding up just fine. But that powder coating is the schiz nitz! B)
