I mentioned the non-HVLP only because I have never used it (which makes me a bit of a dinosaur  ) In my work (architectural and product modelmaking) I never had to use one so I never taught myself, and that may have to change if I am going to be spraying parts on my bike. I get good even coverage with my gun but I can see the benefits of HVLP....time will tell.

PPG is good stuff. Is that the single stage or bc/cc?

How much painting are you going to do?

Assuming you have a compressor, you can get a $20 trim gun, and a $40-50 separator/filter. Use aerosol primer from an autobody supply as well as your base coat, then either buy clear or use the aerosol 2k clear. Bikes are easy, you can clean up paint jobs fairly easy with 1500 paper, hit it with clear and buff.

I have a $100 range HVLP that I use for body panes on my fleet. A $20 Ebay trim gun I use for motorcycle frames/body work. Mainly use aerosol (unless I need a custom color) because it's cheap and easy cleanup. Posted before, but I painted my Z1 2 1/2 years ago all aerosol, for under $60 total. But I had some Kaw green mixed up for a KX resto so I bought the trim gun. Used single stage urethane on that.

I'm all for quality tools, but if it's just going to sit under your bench...

This is all aerosol, I masked the original stripes. I'm restoring another Z1, going with aerosol too but I need to add my own stripes so the white will be pinstripe and the gold will be paint.

This is the frame I did with a $20 trim gun and single stage urethane. Just about a pint of paint and the rest of the materials was around $125.

The $985 is without the gun. I was going to pickup a 2 gun kit for $180 from Devilbiss which would be a one time puchase. I would continue to use them, as I have other projects to paint. The base color is a standard color, but is expensive due to the pearl and metallic within it. I am also painting both pinstripes in. I would be using the disposable filters on the inlet to the guns. I will powdercoating the frames and bracketry. I need to use a catalyzed clear due to the fuel tank, so I don't believe that they make that in an aerosol?

I can save about $250 if i don't take the tank down to bare metal. Are you saying that you have just scuffed up the stock paint and just shot over it? Any risk with that? I have two small dents I need to take out of the tank, which may need a skim of metal glaze as well.

I can get in in either Omni or Deltron. Omni is the "cheaper' of the PPG line and sprays more like water I am told due to the reduced pigmentation compounds within the paint mixture. The paint cost in Deltron was $140 / qt - Base, $50 / 1/2 pint for each pinstripe color = $240

This paint only uses a reducer, so reduccer is cheap enough which I think was $60/gal? I don't have the BOM with me here at work. The clear was $75 / qt for their premium I think. Then the activator cost....

Primer wsa cheap, it was like $50 / gal for the base sealer primer. If I needed the epoxy primer for bare metal, that was $225 / gal.

Sanding and masking supplies (with the airfilters) was $150 The Metal Glaze was like $30....

The stock base coat was fine, the clear coat lifted after removing the bike from storage. I just hand sanded the clear off and sprayed the new base coat.

Google Spray Max 2k clear coat. Its a 2 part clear in an aerosol can. Theres an activator on the can that combines the paint. Only good for 24 hours. I did my Z1 with one can, but 2 cans is needed for good coverage. $18 a can.
