Z1-R Restoration - Paint Sample

03 Oct 2012 00:00
#552134
Looking for a sample of 1978 Z1-R paint to scan and match. If anyone can help with a sample - even a broken piece as long as it's big enough to scan not smaller than about 100mmx100mm and the paint is ok. Alternatively, if anyone has already been down this path and is willing to pass on either paint codes or paint scan data file/s that I can use to generate a match that'd be fantastic! I'll pay any freight and packaging costs and be eternally grateful to anyone who can please help. Thanks, Bill. BTW - I live "downunder" in Australia

welcome.

the (i believe)silver mist blue stock 1978 z1r paint has been discussed on here before,i believe there was also a kz650 that used the same paint.

i am of no help.
i do have side covers and a seat rail with the original paint, but am unwilling to risk them in shipping.

hopefully one of the other guys can be of more assistance.

got any pics of the z1r that you are working on?

Thanks for your reply. A couple of pics of the bike as purchased. I've stripped it right down and it's about to get the frame, stands, etc sandblasted and painted. I've got most bits to rebuild the rolling chassis - looking forward to putting the jigsaw back into one piece.

Gday Dave - I live/work on the South Coast of NSW, about 160Km South of Sydney. Thanks for the offer of the tank - what sort of $$ are you asking? In any case, the postage/freight costs from USA to Oz would probably be prohibitive?

Is that an 80 z1r you want to make over as a 78?
If thats an actual 78 bike Id check the numbers on engine cases to see if somebody changed the bottem end or swapped cranks on ya.
Ive been looking for a 78 for years but recently obtained an 80 that im going to clone into a blue 78 turbo bike B)

The bike frame is definitely '78 Z1-R and engine is '79 Z1000A2 MkII - I checked the numbers against Manuf specs per Tony Sculper's bible. Not an original setup I know, but I bought it knowing this was the case. The engine internals have been done - 1st o'size, new pistons, rings and top end done. I was keen to get this bike which will be my 3rd Z1-R and second rebuild project - last one was a 1973 H2A which was completed back in about 1990.

Bill...the thing that throws me off of it as being a MK2 engine is the round top cam covers. :S
But they can be adapted to fit.

What color was the bike originally?

Well spotted! I bought the bike with 2 cam covers - 1 round and one square - the one shown was just roughly placed on to keep the bugs/dirt out sorry for the confusion. Mind you given that i've got a '78 frame and a '79 MkII it's a bit tricky to know which variant I should aim at as a completed project - engine covers etc.

The paintwork was originally metallic stardust silver (some residual traces of the original colour remain under the crappy black repaint)
