I think the Acrylics are better for Gas protection. Don't use oil based enamel and an acrylic clear, it will F up. Stay with one type or the other.

martin_csr wrote: Duplicolor Truck Van & SUV acrylic-lacquer is NOT fuel resistant at all. I doubt that any 1-part spray paint wlll be fuel resistant.

I've never used it, but I'd recommend clear coating w a 2k clear after painting the tank.... the 2k stuff is a urethane product in a special can. Search for SprayMax Clear or KillerCans.

I also agree with this. Borrow a compressor and buy a $15 detail spray gun from Harbor Freight to spray the clear if you must. Otherwise I think OldManRock had a hand pump powered sprayer he used, but it wasn't cheap.

+1, on putting a urethane 2 part clear coat on your base color. I used OMR's method as per his instructions from the file base here www.kzrider.com/filebase/cat_view/231-no...l-specific?start=100 . Scroll down the page until us see his "HEAD LIGHT CAN PAINT" link. I used Duplicolor for the base color and I used the Preval aerosol sprayer purchased from homedepot (ACE and Lowes carries it as well I think). I also purchased the urethane clear and activator from a auto paint store. You mix the clear and activator in the sprayer jar and attach the aerosol sprayer to the jar and it works like a rattle can. Gets expensive, $15 for the sprayer and $50 for the clear coat and activator ( but I have enough left over to do 15 bikes, lol). A better option for the price I think is the 2K urethane clear coat /activator mentioned by martin_csr. About $20 per can from eastwood.com I think. If you have to buy two cans plus shipping, the better option may be the one I went with, since the cost difference narrows.

A friend of mine tried the aerosol 2k. It didn't turn out glossy like their two part clear that I used, but I wasn't there to watch the application. Not sure.

He must have sprayed in humid climate or didn't prep properly. I used that SparayMax aerosol 2k clear on my Z1 and it came out great. I did have some orange peel that I wetsanded 1500/2000 then just buffed.
Most places you have to buy a minimum amount of clear so $17 a can vs. $90+ for clear is a no brainer. And I have my own spray setup. BTW - you need two cans for a fender, two side covers and a tank.

Whoring the bike some more

Here's a write up for painting chromed head lights.... Same process for plastic side covers using adhesive promoter... The tank, same process with out promoter...

can painting...

For the Prevail unit, home depot, ACE hardware, Lowes etc all have them... It's actually rather cheap.

2 part clear, I got mine @ Sherwin Williams automotive paint stores, several here in Phoenix valley.... for both 2 part clear ~ $60.

The key is you can use about any can automotive paint but as mentioned, none will hold up to fuel without a clear coat applied... The clear is what is protecting the paint from fading, fuel spill, chipping etc... ;)

I have never tried it with auto paint but Home Depot sells a jar that an airesol can attaches to. Not much air but it makes anything a rattle can. If you can't get a compressor it would work.
