Removing Paint from Metal?
01 Nov 2011 11:59
Is it ok to use a heavy duty paint remover on the tank to strip it right down to bare metal?, just the outside

You can use just about anything you want to strip that tank but I assume you are referring to a chemical stripper?

Yes, i am indeed, chemical stuff. Its called Nitromorus here in the UK but im dure its the same as any thick nearly gel type paint remover.
Are the tanks on these bikes steel or alloy? (I'm guessing steel)

I used a wire cup brush attached to my angle grinder to strip the frame parts of my A1. It took no time at all! I will be using it to strip the tank, side cover and oil tank as well. Just make sure you have eye protection, gloves, thick clothing, and a hat on as well. I pulled one of those little metal pieces from the stripper out of my scalp (wasn't wearing a hat), and another member said he pulled a bunch out of his arm when he used one before.

Most of the liquid strippers used to have a nasty chemical in it called Methlyl Chloride, The EPA over here has acted on reducing the amount in these strippers as it can be dangerous to inhale, damaging the lungs.
If you're using a stripper with this in it, do it in a well ventilated area, chemical resistant gloves, eye protection, some disposable paint brushes, and something in which to scrape with that won't scratch the metal tank. This stuff will burn the skin if splashed on, so take precautions.
Don't put the stripper in a plastic container as it will eat a hole in it, a metal container will resist it the best.

These strippers come in two types; a water based, easy to rinse off, and one that requires solvent to remove. If it were me, I'd get the water rinse off type.

Thanks & im very well aware of how potent & dangerous this stuff is hence the post, i actually thought it would be too strong to use on the tank! It comes in a metal container & thats the way it's gonna be stored! I'm sure it melts nylon brushes etc so whats the best thing to use to scrape the paint with? Just use nylon & then dispose of them?

Cheap, bristle brushes work best for paint stripping as the Nylon ones will quickly melt in the stripper. Maybe a piece of sharpened Lexan or Plexiglass for scraping will hold up to the stripper.

got a tip from banshee used an old credit card worked real well. recently stripped the paint or powder coat on a wheel the gel stuff worked pretty well remember it is a chemical reaction and it doesnt make any difference if you leave it on longer than recommended it doesnt work any better usually 15-20 minutes.
Thought I would try leaving it on all day thinking longer is better. it made no difference worse if anything.
