No, it will not hurt chrome at all.
After that use good ol' S.O.S. pads to clean up.
But it might darken your aluminum.
I always strip the clear laquer film off of stock engine covers and lower fork legs with stripper.
Because I am either polishing them or glassbeading them to paint or powdercoat.

Wear Eye goggles and rubber gloves when using stripper!!
Methylene Chloride stings and burns like hell.

If your 77 650 has the stock engine side covers, cam covers etc, they are not chrome, but rather polished aluminium. At least the ones on my 77kz650 B1 are.

thanx every body , the covers are chrome , i guess from another year , anyhow , i got everything clean stripped on engine . it just the engine in the frame , blocked off intake and exhaust ports , soaked it down with gel paint stripper and power washed it , did this twice and its clean aluminium and chrome . except the chrome has some copper plating showing thru , sort of like someone polished it too much . but the head and jug finns and block look great.

Oven cleaner does the trick on rattle can paint and as an added bonus won't even hurt plastic. B)

Let it soak in good and hit it with even a strong garden hose. Might take a few passes but you'l get there.

x2 on the oven cleaner. Im doing the same thing right now. You've got to let it sit for a while. Maybe and hour or two.
