cool glad it was something simple
my gpz had a lawnmower filter on it when I got it. it was completely clogged ran to the autoparts store put another on just like it and rode for the day

I got a John Deere shop down the street from me. Maybe they will have a temp until I get the Z1 parts :)

The in-line filter should be gravity free-flow design.

A non-motorcycle in-line filter might require a slight fuel pressure to begin the flow through the filter, which may be an issue on a gravity-fed system.

If a new in-line filter is fitted, would test it for the ability to free-flow gravity-fed fuel.

Picked up a mower filter from WalMart. It has good fuel flow, but I still ran into the same issue. I'm going to try swapping out new plugs next time I feel like pulling the tank off and working on it. Hopefully I just gunked them up a bit...

Ok...pulled the carbs today and decided not to tear them down when I realized I had plenty of gas in all four bowls. I swapped out the mower filter for one of the good ones I got from Z1. Put it all back together and ran fine until I got on to go for a test ride. Still dropping cylinders. I also pulled all the spark plugs and they looked fine. My guess is the Dyna-S again...failing when the bike warms up. Thoughts?

I cant remember if I suggested this already but here it goes

got my bike fired up with a new battery ran good cold get about a mile waway bam run on 2 cylinders
let it cool off run fine for maybe a mile maybe all day. had to kick start everywhere I went so I condemmed the voltage regulator put a new one in it same problem only didnt have to kick start

had them do a load test on my battery it was bad under a load. replaced battery all was fine
rode several short trips no problems.

got on it a little going out the highway get off the highwway sitting at a stop light take off drop 2 cylinders and wouldnt pull a sick whore off the pot. had to feather the throttle to get it to run.

on the side of a busy rd I get it running lift the tank grab the wire loom it picks up and is running fine. shut it off pull the tank completely off and cant find anything wrong so I grabbed the coil wires where they plug into the double female (with single male)and it wasnt a good tight fit. pushed it in as good as I could road 10 miles to my brothers shop crimped the end 500 miles later and no problems

Sorry for such a long story I would quadruple check the coil wires into the harness when mine would get hot it would expand enough to cause it to act up even though visually it was connected.
and of course have your battery load tested

No need to apologize. Lots of good info. You may be spot on about the battery. It is roughly 3 years old, and the last 2 days I messed with the bike I drained the battery trying to restart the bike after it died. I put it on the trickle charger overnight and it worked fine for a couple starts the next day before draining again. I've been considering upgrading the battery anyway, but can you guys refresh my memory of the lead acid vs AGM, vs lithium iron batteries. I would definitely like a sealed, but am leaning more toward AGM than lithium iron due to cost.

EDIT: I rechecked my wiring connections when hot and they all were snug, so I don't think that's the issue...

I bought an AGM from batteries plus 2 year replacement waranty Xtreme power or something like that I saw in one of OMR's pics he has the same battery.

It hasen't seen a battery tender and I have stressed it alot rewiring and the like no problems yet it's less than a year old but I recommend it 90 bucks I think

Cool thanks. I'm hoping battery is the last issue for this problem...I haven't been on a decent ride in about 6 months...lol

it's supposed to be 79 record high and sunny today and i'm doin honey do's!!! well when i'm not on the computer I would rather be riding

Ok....

Found a loose connection and fixed that problem. Bike seems to now run on 3 cylinders very well. #3 carb is not getting fuel, so need to clean that one for sure (any thoughts on what to look at?). Hopefully that will fix the running problem, but I also discovered my new petcock leaks in the off position too... :-|

Just wanted to thank you for the play by play on this build. After reading through it, maybe I missed it, but I wanted to ask if you had to do anything with your headlight and the mounting ears with your clip ons. I'm ordering the same set for my build. Also, was there any mods to the cables?
