Straight out of the bottle sprayer....
Let her soak a couple minutes pending grime/oil/satins then hit with a tooth brush or larger bristle brush...

Crap is magic in a bottle and green safe, no fumes/chemical burns... ;)

The piston dome 30 year carbon build up was soaked overnight, hit with a tooth brush and like new.... Seriously, not joking that's all I did on them...

Now the engine side cases, well of course those where buffed out with aluminum polish... Simple green is a cleaner not a polish...

What about for removing white crusty oxidation on the engine fins? I've got some starting to form and I'm wondering what works well for removing that. I've read recommendations of aluminum wheel cleaner. I bought some from the local auto store and it didn't do much.

Nylon wire wheels..... ;)

Orange for tough
Gray for light
Blue for medium...

For extreme oxidization, wheel first then Simple Green...

I wonder if a good steam cleaning would have worked.

OMR what's your polishing procedure after the simple green and tooth brush?

I use polish such as tr3 or turtle aluminum polish for mine between the crevasses. when I ride in the rain the wheel slings water all over the engine and I would like to zip tie a plastic bag on the frame to eliminate this problem. water spots will accumulate on an engine if you get water on it while it's hot.

polish also helps against heat vs dirt.
