exhaust repaint need help! was created by vettezr1262
My KZ550 Spectre had rusty pipes, so I took them off, I'm in the process of sand blasting them, then I want to repaint them the original gloss black....I read up on this high temperature paint for headers (my biggest concern on the exhaust system) and almost everyone has trouble with any of the "High Temperature" header paint. So should I turn to cerarmic powder coating? and roughly how expensive is it? I want a practical solution that won't blow my money on this bike.

i have used hi-temp paint mostly engine satin - even a little in gloss black with no issues.
I like the ceramic much better as it is more resistant, but at a cost. I think I paid $250 for my 4-1 (just coating)

You might wanna try using some metal prep etch, Sherwin-Williams makes some and its awesome. sandblasting will prep the surface adequately for most paint, but if it is in a high heat area I would etch it with the acid as well. It chemically prepares the metal to receive paint. Any good powdercoating place will do this even if it has been sand-blasted before, but if your looking for real durability there's nothing better than sweet sweet powder coat B)

If you are sand blasting them (not soda, walnut, etc.) then the surface will probably be a little rough for the gloss black you want to use. Flat or satin might be the way to go.

If your talking exhaust, powder is not the way to go. I work in a powder coating shop and powder is not rated for anything over 410f, which I am sure your pipes will reach time and time again. Plus powder coating will hold in the heat causing your engine to run hotter than optimal. Best bet for a high gloss finish that will last and actually help disperse the heat is cermakrome ( not a powder ).
When we do exhausts we use 120grit aluminum oxide sand in our blasters, which leaves a nice smooth surface on the metal. We then put a base coat of MCX ( which is rated for 1200F and acts the corrosion resistance barrier), bake that at 600f for 2 hours. We then etch that coating with the aluminum oxide at 40-50psi, then apply 2 coats of 2000degree black, flashing off in between coats at 400f for 1 hour, then bake at 650f for 2 hours. Then to achieve the gloss, we do 2 coats of cerma-seal, which is an airdry coating.
We have never had any problems or complaints. As for price on a 4 into 1, it will vary depending on the pipes and condition but in the range of $225-250.
JetHot is one company that sells exhaust coating. We use Tech-line Coatings in the shop.
Hope this helps.

Many years ago(more than I care to think about), I purchased a Kerker K2S for my 1982 GPz1100. Being the supplied paint was burning off and rust was showing through, I asked around the bike shops for what they did in my situation. To a person, the name "Flame Spray" was mentioned.

I lived in San Diego at the time, and their shop was close by. They first blasted the old paint off, and then sprayed on an Aluminum coating. I then used a high temperature black header spray as a final covering. No engine overheating has been found, an except for an occasional touchup from road debris, it's been maintenance free.

I had my kerker done about 20 years ago buy jethot when they had a three day turn around. It cost me 120 back then best thing i did. I use to sand blast my header once a year and paint it never lasted. They coat inside and out runs cooler. After 20 years it starting to get thin in some areas. Some rust is coming through. Going to get it redone this winter there turn around is alot longer now and more expensive but worth it.

Alright thanks guys. This is basically just a selling point but I'm planning on riding this bike about 1/2 a year before selling it. So if there is a much less expensive way that will last only this short amount of time, that is what I'd prefer. I'm still working on blasting them...I'm now avoiding it in this terrible heat but I was planning on then using the claimed 2000 degree F high-temp spray paint. I have to say I do not believe that whatsoever but like I said, I want a cheap fix for my poorly taken care of pipes.
