What brand do you guys recommend.

Satin or gloss finish?

Epoxy or ?

Prime first?

What's the best match to factory paint?

Thanks!!!

The factory paint was non-primer semi gloss black. It could have been gloss black but Kawi put a half-ass finish on them so the final result was more semi-gloss. Personally, I like PJ1 Fast Black epoxy paint. It has a finish that resembles a factory finish without looking like a Rustoleum spray-bomb job. Works great on other black components and switch housings too.

Here's some pics:

Frame

Battery box, helmet hooks, etc

Switch housings

I made a write-up on the switch housings over on Z1OC. If you're starting with sand blasted parts like I did, you'll need 4 cans to do a complete Z1. Frame, swing arm, and all the misc parts. PJ1 doesn't recommend a primer for this paint.

Powdercoat it- you'll get a much more durable finish.

You can't PC a frame and retain the original VIN decal.

Yours truly. But I haven't found a donor yet. There's a long thread on Z1OC.

A couple of things I don't like about PC is it hides frame cracks and it's not easily repaired. It does look great and it holds up well but on a '73 I'd like to keep it as close to original as possible.

RB the triple king can get a VIN sticker for you.

Ok so disregarding powder coating and any brand of rattle can what would you use, I’m ready to buy a spray gun and step up to good durable automotive type paint.

Tiki, for the KX Im restoring I sprayed the frame with a single stage urethane from an auto paint supplier. It cost $125 for a pint of paint, catalyst and reducer. Im using a cheap $20 detail gun off Ebay. Got great results but to match an original Z you may want the shop to cut down on the gloss.
