I would like to hear from anyone that has undertaken or plans to undertake a composite project.....anyone?

inspired by your carbon work i found a supplier only 10 miles away , i even got to have a look around their workshop as they were laying up some moulds , i can go back anytime , ask questions and get advise so if theres anything i can ask to help with your project let me know .
i posted my attempts in my project thread but , if you dont mind a thread hijack , here's what i did

And I'm toying with doing my fenders...but Adam knows that already. Still on the fence.

Kenty, that is really cool! I have never tried to overlay anything, but a wheel has some tight radiis to conform to. How did you keep the fabric in place, and where did you hide your seams? Bravo! Next time you're down there, ask them what they use for tooling coats in epoxy, and if they use a special first coat in the mold when laminating a part.

DD, you just need to pull the trigger :silly:

Back to business! Enough fooling around with frames, forks, custom triple trees and tig welders.....all that silly stuff :P
I mixed up a few grams of fast epoxy with some graphite powder to start patching all the bubbles I have in my tail mold. I debated whether to even bother with trying to patch up this brand new mold, or to just scrap it and make a new one. I decided that it was worthwhile practice to try and patch it up. At the very least I'll learn how NOT to fix mold blemishes. I have some limited practice patching bug holes in my first sidecover mold, and that didn't turn out so hot. I'm hoping this time will be better  Here is the void to be patched:

I figured out that the best way to work the resin into the holes is with a dental pic (also works great for cleaning the holes out before filling with resin ;) ) The tough part with this patch is it is on a radius, and even with the graphite added the resin has a rather low viscosity, making it pull away from either end and pool in the middle.

It's tough to get a good perspective on these pics, and that first one wasn't all that great. The pic of the patch is better though

You can see the patch as the darker black spot. It is not in the part, so the finish is not as important, as is the fact that in the center of the patch the resin is a little proud of the original mold surface. I'll likely sand it down a little, but I won't spend a ton of time refinishing this particular spot. I'll save that for the top tail surface  You can also see a few black dots in the pic; these were smaller pinholes that I filled simply by dipping the tip of the dental pic in resin, then droping it into the void. It worked pretty slick!

You may not wind up needing this but you do have some options for epoxy filler to control the viscosity. I have personally used the wood flower listed here: boatbuildercentral.com/products.php?cat=13

It creates a mixture with the consistency of peanut butter. The stuff generally stays in place fairly well, unless you are trying to get it to stick upside down. You may not want sawdust in your molds, but you might try silica or micro-balloons.

Oh yes, the topic. Please tell us Adam.

Leon, thats quite the arsenal. Hopefully I'll be touring the states this summer sometime. Sooner if I get a job down there.
