I'm doing an original resto on a 73 Z1. I want to re-clear coat the engine covers and fork lowers after stripping and buffing. A quick search on the internet reveals 100's of polished aluminum/alloy clear coating products, with each claiming to be the best.
Here's what I've eliminated:
1. Clear powder coat - to thick and very difficult to repair or redo if needed.
2. 2 part (2K) automotive clear coat - Finish to smooth for good adhesion.
3. Wipe on's like Zoop Seal and Shark Hipe - removed by Petroleum products, not a good thing for items that will be filled with oil!
4. Clear aerosol lacquer - scratches easily and yellows with UV(sun) exposure.
I'm really interested in POR-15's Glisten. If it works as they claim, it sounds perfect. Has anyone tried it? It's not cheap, and I don't want to waist money on an "experiment".
What have you used that you would recommend and use again?
Thanks,

There are three that are good. One is a bake on "Gun-Kote" made by KG industries and is very thin but brittle. One is "Glisten PC" made by POR-15 and the last is "Clear 4 Chrome" made by ALSA. All three are very good.

I have always wondered why people don't just rub some turtle wax on chrome bits. I understand that putting polish on a muffler or something would just burn the stuff off and discolour, but clutch covers and alternator covers don't get that hot.

The later KZ1000 engine covers were actually clear-coted. The modern clear-coats are absolutely terrific, they do not yellow with the heat and the UV.
