Engine cases powdercoat? was created by lewisj
Can the engine cases of a 73 Z1 be powder coated or is therea heat issue? I know the powder coating process involves "baking" the paint on, but wasn't sure if there are problems associated with the engine heat. Thanks in advance for your help.

All of the powder coating websites I have seen showed at least one picture of a cylinder block coated. If it can take the heat of an air cooled cylinder I imagine the cases shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure if they use a special powder or what, but if you go to a reputable powder coater they should know what to do.

My local Powder coating shop did not recommend it. This was a few years ago and powder technology may have improved since. They could not guarantee against wrapage. Cases are considerably thinner material than a cylinder. They are not designed to withstand anywhere near the temperatures that a cylinder block is normally subjected to.
I've been happy with the PJ1 FastBlack S (satin).

Thanks MDZ! I have acan of Satin ready to go. Just thought I would see what the general consesus was. I will also check with the powder coater and get his opinion.

I've found that if you can bake the painted part for 1 hour at 350 F, it will make for a more durable coating.

I use our electric oven with the parts hung on the wire racks using coat hanger wire.I suppose welding/brazing rod would work too.

Probably have to open windows to vent as the fumes may make the wife/girlfriend as why the house stinks.

This one is powdercoated (head, cylinders, case), gets ridden a lot and looks great. I say powdercoat away.

It's not mine.

PC'ing engine parts is fine. Just don't get it in the engine. There is high temp stuff available, but still bake it at 400 F for 20 minutes. Not likely that you'll warp something that fast. I've done a head cover and clutch cover with no problems.

jeffasaki,

I know what your saying, but I have owned this bike since new (37 years)and it wasn't stock when it left the showroom floor., headers pods, always adding something. Who would have known in 73 that they would bring this kind of money 30 yars later. She's always been a great bike, just needs some spit and polish and a 1075 upgrade , better suspension. paint and........ oh you know how it goes!!!
Thanks for caring! Ride on!
