If you go to bare medal there is a prime for bare metel. I think it is green in color.

Then i would use a good quality sandable primer. The kind you mix up.

When I did my '74 frame, I used aluminum aircraft paint stripper and a power washer. Apply paint stripper, wait 20-40 minutes until the paint bubbles up and hit it with the power washer. 70 degrees or warmer give the best results with the stripper. I used a brass wire brush on the stubborn areas. Repeat as needed. Wear long sleeves, pants, and headgear if you do this. When finished, apply phosphoric acid to the bare frame to neutralize any rust, prime and paint. I like this method better than grinding or sandblasting because you don't remove any metal material from the frame. I also masked off the VIN sticker so it remained in tact.

I just had an idea for you guys that live near a beach or have lots of sandy soil. Years ago, I had an old tow chain that lived outside next to my shop and was always rusty. I would tie it on to my tractor when I needed to use it and drag it to where ever I was working. It would look brand new by the time I got to where I was going. Why couldn't you drag your frame up and down the beach? Watch out for rocks!

so i went to aouto zone and spent 45 on some sprayable aircraft stripper, and variuos primers and black rim paints to try and spray my frame....then i went to home depot to look at spray guns and see if they sold sand blaster attachments,

i was looking at this 79$ and 99 $husky hplv gravity sprayer.......

when my phone rings......it was arai59.....

he told me to never use sand on the frame or any parts...to use the plastic media beads...as they won't put dimples....

then he described the 69$ husky that i was standing right in front of and the type of black super strong primer that i will have to get through an auto body supllier.....

so i returned the sprays and stripper and am now waiting on my 2hr len stuart ...painting 101 dvd and a sunnny weekend to go get the blaster and bb's.....

maybe i'll have some pics to post soon....

I dont think you will dimple the frame with sand especially with a small compressor, it roughs it up just perfect for adhesion. If you have a compressor that runs on diesel and is attached to a trailer then maybe that would dimple it but not a small one

I have sandblasted my sidecovers before and it dosent even harm the plastic. Thats with my every day compressor, nuttin fancy

Which side do you lay the motor on typically? I was worried about cracking the rotor or ignition cover so I muscled it in and scraped my new paint.

Gman - that's a great idea for a frame stand. I hung mine from the ceiling, but the rope kept getting in the way.
