There are three you can use which are absolutely fantastic. The best way to do it out of the three is Sherwin Williams "Polane". This is a two part poly urethane and is Impervious to all solvents. Polane will cost you about $125. It is a paint that is designed to go on bare metal. The next two are virtually identical and much cheaper. POR-15 & KBS The difference between the two is the price KBS is cheaper. Here is the link to KBS. www.kbs-coatings.com/index.html

Powdercoating won't cost you that much.

got my frame and rims powdercoated for $180. Just make sure the frame is exactly how you want it before powdercoating, as it is not as easy to go back and fix things later.

For the KBS Motorcycle frame kit you will pay $25 with postage and do all of the work your self. If it only costs $180 to powder coat a frame I would not bother with the DIY. UNLESS, you don't want to bother removing everything from the frame. That now is a different story.

PJ1 Fast Black High-Gloss Epoxy frame paint

I don't know if it matches the stock color, but a number of folks have reported that it's a very good product. Here's one quote - not sure by whom:

I just recently went through this same dilemma and ended up with PJ1 Fast Black High-Gloss Epoxy frame paint. Had to order it from my local motorcycle PJ1 distributor, shits hard to find on the shelves.

On a piece of test metal, I originally tried engine paint enamels of various manufacturers but found they chipped rather easily by dropping bolts/sharp objects on the metal.

In the PJ1 testing in the same manner, it didn't chip at all. With a little harder force applied it did make a dimple/imperfection in the paint which would be expected even in powder coating but still no chipping! With this in mind, I painted my frame, so far so good.

Another option which is pretty cheap (don't laugh now) is John Deere tractor paint. You can get a hardener to go with it. Lot's of folks around here paint their boat trailers and of course their farm implements with it. I think it's an enamel.
Also comes in a spray can, but then you can't mix the hardener in. But it's still pretty tough without it.
Here's some on ebay: cgi.ebay.com/John-Deere-Hitachi-Black-Hi...yZ1267QQcmdZViewItem

But be careful, there appears to be other companies calling their paints 'John Deere' just because of the color.
Please use the black though. I saw a guy with a John Deere green bike one time with JD yellow wheels.

The PJ1 test failed miserably... I also consider the possibility of improper prep, unknown for sure... But for $7 a can no thanks, too many chips for me, no happy with the results.

I tried many and ended up with Dupli Color Wheel coating. Designed for NON CHIP! After cure time, impact with flat blade screw driver....

Did it dimple, yes, did it chip NOPE!

Downfall, not a lot of colors but I wanted black as it was so good to go... Glad I chose paint over powder coat due to Uh-Oh, forgot about that... Sand down, weld & then repaint...

No one knows the difference.... ;)

Anyone tried the Valspar Tractor & Implement Enamels with the add-in hardener? They carry it at the local Farm & Fleet around me and I picked up a quart of gloss black and the hardener to try out. Not sure exactly when I'll be able to spray it, but hopefully since it's a two part it will be tougher than a rattle can. If not, sand again and use something else, I guess....

It was the "non-toxic to livestock" that sold me....don't want to be poisoning my Kaw after all... :P
