I have a 78 KZ1000 B LTD that I was pondering painting the engine I but wasnt sure if that would cause overheating problems. If anyone could shed any light on this I would appreciate it.

Well MkII's came with painted engines, and so did GPz's, so I can't imagine its too bad on it.

yeah it looks like it was originally painted black from the factory but wasnt sure if adding a new/another layer would cause problems.

it actually increases the surface area of the engine so it actually helps remove excess heat that is one of the main reasons harley years ago started painting there engines and trans missions with wrinkle finish

If you're worried about overheating, look at getting an oil cooler. They came with the 81 and 82 GPZ1100's and on the ELR models.

I think sudco sells the fittings.

What a timely thread. I was thinking about repainting my engine to freshen the look up a little bit. I found some paint that was rated up to 500 degrees. It this high enough or do I need to look for something higher?

Many years ago read a thread that stated black disipated heat better than other colors. That asside, black cases are easier to maintain than silver, and give Pop. If building resto. silver is the way to go. temp shouldn't be a factor. my 2 cents G

the engine paint at the parts stores works fine too and is about 6 bucks.....also can be reversed fairley easy by painting brake cleaner on a part and waiting an hour or two......just my stupid opinion...i know some will say it does not last but ,it lasts long enough....wont hold up to meteors though i bet......

sorry to "hijack" this thread, but my question is along the same lines.
I'm thinking of painting my valve cover because it's a little tarnished. I figured if I had IT polished, I'd end up having to polish the whole engine and I don't really want to do that.
Do you guys think (purely opinion here) that that would look dumb? a black valve cover
