COvering a torn seat

Greetings,

The seat on my bike has had it, however my foam and seatpan are still fine. I am looking for a good way to cover the seat. I was thinking of brown leather or leather like material and i was looking to see if anyone had andy good ideas or useful experience for me..

You might try an upholster. I had my seat redone, KZ650SR, for $50 CAD. The material was marine grade naugahyde.
So get some quotes. You may be surprised at the cost.

JC Whitney sells the Saddleman covers, I paid about $65 for mine. Easy to install, looks great.

I just replaced the seat on my 1100A2 with a cover made by whatever company is in Hurst TX. I paid shipping and they are about 4 miles from where I live.......I did not know that until I saw the shipping sheet. Nice cover, looks good too....chris3

I bought a cover from these folks... nice family owned business for my 79 KZ1000E1 shafty. I didn't like the stock cover on the shafty as it has those tacky looking 70s lateral ridges... I wanted a smooth cover. I was a little apprehensive about buying a cover as I have bought them in the past and no matter how I tugged and grunted, they just never seemed to fit right. Well I called the folks in Hurst and they cut me a cover with no lateral ridges and it fits just perfect. Took me about an hour to remove the old cover which is held by a bunch of little bent-over prongs along the seat edge and put the new seat on. You have to spray the foam with upholstery cement (they tell you what kind to get in the directions) and then just pull the cover edge over the edge of the pan and catch the cover on the prongs... The new seat cover looks like a pro did it. They can do custom seat covers if they already have the pattern in stock at the same price as the standard. By custom, I mean color and shape but they can take out the ridges and stuff easily. When I got the cover, I didn't realize Jeff at Z1E sold covers as well... he tells me they are real nice quality and fit well.

You can simply buy the material at a cloth supplier (I went to Anna's Linens) and DIY like I did, which set me back only $12 for several yards of marine grade vinyl - more than enough to do two full seats, and left overs for patching if needed.

Granted, it's not all that pretty (the line near the middle of the seat is from a previous butcher job the PO did to the seat foam ).
But it's much better than the original tattered cover was, and has stood up to lots of miles over the past few years.

Is that just stretched over the spikes and trimmed. I was thinking of making the seat cover myself because the foam is still really good.
