Ok. I knew that it would attack the paint.

How do I amend it. Do I strip the wax and get it with the 2000 grit wet/dry, rubbing compound, swirl remover and wax again?

Any suggestions as to how to fuel proof it better?

Do you have any pics of the damage? I just rattle canned mine and I'm afraid of the same thing.

same thing recently happened to mine. I tried compound and it helped some. It doesn't look as if it got to the paint, so I've rewaxed. Maybe I'll hit it w/the compound a couple of more times. I'll probably wait until winter and go at it w/1500 and reclearcoat...if I don't just strip and redo in another color.

Yes Deacon, I will get some better pics of it tomorrow. It was hard to get a good angle on the slight, slight damage to the finish.

Mr. Jones, I wonder if it would be a good idea to strip the wax or not. Otherwise I will do some wet sanding to the affected parts, and buff, swirl and wax again.

Any input as to how to better fuelproof the finish?

I have seen threads where the guys have talked about expensive clears in a can. Some with hardeners and such.
A search should locate them.

I am going to pay to have my clear done. Hopefully, by Mark Wing.

I've talked to my local auto parts store... They have gas-resistant clear in a can.

I used PJ1 epoxy clear in a can, very gas proof, and only about $7 at my local shop. The most current paint job on my bike is gloss black rustoleum appliance epoxy. Looks better than some factory paint jobs I've seen, gas proof, and takes wax very well. Just pay close attention to the re-coat window on whatever paint you use, I had to redo my side panels because I waited longer the 1/2 hour, but less than 1 week....to paint alligated terribly.

This is ok, I can do my gas tank a fourth time!!

I need to look into stripping the wax, and painting an "epoxy clear" or "gas resistant clear" over the existing enamel clear....

If I remember correctly, enamel over laquer is good, laquer over enamel is bad.

I imagine that the fuel proof clear will also be more resistant to the inner thigh scuffing that has dulled the finish on the sides of my tank.

Sorry....gas proof...as in, I spilled enough gas thanks to a nozzle "cough" to cover the tank. not a a single soft spot or smudge.

I want to re-clear coat. I will do this over the existing enamel clear coat.

I need to remove all the wax that I applied.

So any recommendations as to which chemicals to use to best strip the wax prior to re-clear coating?

How do I be sure to remove all wax?

Call your local auto paint store. I think they have stuff that will strip the wax, but not harm the paint.
