Im a proud second owner of a KZ900 LTD. I want to give it a paint job like a Z1 900.

will this hurt the resell value?

If it's all original and the paint is in great shape it could hurt the value. There is a certain memeber on here that won't even look at a bike if it has been repainted, even to factory specs so I guess it's up to the buyer. Who would want to sell a KZ anyway? :P

In a nutshell, yes. And not merely because of a repaint, either. The Z900B model has a superior value above the Z900A model...and the closer to stock condition, the closer to that higher value....so deviations from stock condition detract from that value. But then you have to consider that it is your bike and you can do whatever you desire:)

Why don't you get a second set of bodywork and have it painted. Then just store the good set and put on your custom painted set. All its going to set you back is the extra price of the body work because prep, paint etc. will still cost the same.

That's what I would do but then its not my bike either.

If the paint is good now it will hurt the value, if it's crap it will help. My bike was far from stock and when it was totaled I got way more for all the mod's than they would have paid if it was stock. I got almost $3500 for my wrecked 77KZ650 because of the custom paint and hopped up engine. Like Streetfighter said get an extra set and have at it. I have 5 different paint sets for my bike

I'm the well known member that would never buy a repainted bike. I was sworn to zip my mouth so I won't get too vocal, and there are definate exceptions to the rule as there as quite a few nicely repainted motorcycles here. The one and only repainted vehical I ever owned was a new 1989 Ford diesel. I looked far and wide for exactly the truck I wanted to buy that would last me the rest of my life, found the absolute perfect example except the dealership had the drivers side fender repainted as well as the roof from freight damage. I knew this within 30 seconds of looking at the truck because repaint will never be 100% perfect as I am an expert  Well, after a year my perfect truck was no longer perfect and I lived 7 more yrs getting sick every time I looked at that fender and roof. 8 yrs I had one roof bad and one fender bad making it look like I was the general public demolition derby driver. My perfect truck was sold purely because of a repainted fender and roof. I bought another perfect truck, but I'd just as soon have my 89 back and no paint will ever touch this one I'll say without reservation.

some before pictures would really help here.
i am a fan of oe paint but there are a lot of exceptions to the rule there.
dents, scratches, bad sun fade etc.
mark wing does some beautiful work but mother kaw has been known to do some fine work of her own.
( wish i could afford a " one off" from mark )

if the bodywork is good, leave it alone.

you will never get out of the bike what you have into it or what you think it's worth.

if your looking to flip the bike, you allready lost unless it is a pristine example with no aftermarket parts.

it is a labor of love for most of us, not a investment.

my only advice is do what will make you say "wow" everytime you open the garage.

but hey, this is only my advice, i have yet to settle on a color scheme for my bike. everytime i think i got it, i see one in that color.
i think i'm painting mine to factory 771000ltd colors.
someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

All my bike really needs is the pin striping, the paint is not original, but its a nice metallic red.

Then the answer is no, repaint will not hurt the value. You already have repaint.
