centering new rim on old rear hub
07 Feb 2026 09:15
Hello, I'm replacing the rim on a spoked rear wheel for a KZ650. I've got it laced up but how do I determine the axial position of the rim relative to the hub? Is there some measurement I need to take to set it at the correct spot? Just looking at it right now it seems to be centered over the two flanges with the spoke holes on the hub, but I don't know if it's supposed to be dished in either direction. Can someone direct me to a website or provide other information so I can get this right? Obviously, the rim has to be on the centerline of the bike, so this is important. Thanks!

In my experience if the rim is drilled for the correct application, and you incrementally tighten the spokes a little at the time by the time, once you get the rim within run-out tolerance the offset of the rim is correct. I have laced rims that were drilled or different hubs and I had to pay more attention to the offset because it didn't want to just line up. Check with a straight edge as Milyard shows. If you have the rim offset too far one way or the other its easy to adjust by tightening and loosing the spokes.

Just to add to the topic here is something I pulled down in the past. It much like the other post indicates how to do so. I do agree since the hub and wheel are those that came stock on the machine the off set should be correct once the wheel, spokes are installed correctly.

For future reference, ALWAYS measure original offset or outer rim edge to some point on hub/spool BEFORE cutting off/unscrewing nipples!

10 Feb 2026 17:49I'm building this from parts. There was no original wheel. I bought the hub separately from the rim and the spokes. Thanks for your reply. For future reference, ALWAYS measure original offset or outer rim edge to some point on hub/spool BEFORE cutting off/unscrewing nipples!

So, he centered the hub on the wheel relative to the rim. I looked it up and there is no offset amount that I can find for a KZ650 with the 18" rear wheel. My assumption then is that the rim is supposed to be centered on the hub. Is that a reasonable assumption?
