76 KZ900 Front Forks Swap Out
24 Jul 2024 19:20
I’m planning to restomod my 76 kz900 and would like to start with newer front forks. It appears the consensus is to use 94-96 zx9r with the mating zx9r wheel. I want to keep this project simple and I’m not looking for the perfect performance outcome. In addition. I’m not attempting to do the restomod on the cheap. I would welcome comments in regard to additional parts or a “how you would do it” to avoid issues or avoid problems. In a separate threat, I will seek advice for a new or different swingarm with a matching zx9r rear wheel.

If you're not so much worried about what it costs, why not go for better performance? If it were me I'd start browsing Webike to see what parts are readily available to emulate the amazing work done by AC Sanctuary or similar. You can get Ohlins front forks to fit the bike, and really have top notch suspension.
A breeze from the west.

Just a follow up question to all, would you use the stock triple clamp or would you go with aftermarket triple?

I guess that depends on budget, the look you want and what you want the geometry to be

With any modification, I think the first two questions should be, What is my goal, and what is my budget?
The next question should be, How much of the work am I able and willing to do myself?
The answers to these questions will largely dictate the rest.
The original post says you want modern forks. It then says you do not want perfect performance and that you do not want the cheapest option.
Why do you want modern forks?

There are things you can do for better handling and braking with stock forks. Personally I like the stock ones I have. Changed the lowers to low mile ones, alloy wheels etc.

Just my opinion but if you are going ahead with the ZX9R rear end then I think the 180 tyre would push the front in turns if you upgrade the stock front end (not enough tyre to work with the back)

The ZX9-R parts are the right choise, only the swingarm could be a problem to your conversion.
I bought a cheap ZX9-R donor bike and use the K&J swimgarm to get street legal in my built.
Got a steal deal on a GSXR 1100 mono shock, engine and mounting kit for the Z1 frame.
I did a pre-test fitment of the parts but i don´t have the time to do the full conversion.
Let´s the pics talk........

All parts should be bolt on only, so no weldings to the frame!
The german TÜV (technical inspection authority) hate weldings to the frame and can then refuses the technical inspection and entry in the vehicle documents to ge street legal.!!!
