KZ650 B2A - O'Ring, Axle and Sprocket Question

Hi All. While cleaning my chain I noticed a piece of rubber hanging out of the rear brake hub (see picture). Looks like an o'ring that I see on the parts diagram from Partzilla. Is it OK to ride while waiting for a new one to arrive? Also, I put my axle in from the left (clutch hand) side of the bike, and secure it with the spacer, nut and cotter pin on the right (brake) side. However I see the diagram has it going in the opposite way. Does it make a difference? And finally, I am able to move my sprocket side to side a little bit when I grab it with both hands. Is this normal? Thanks!

When you grab the sprocket carrier, is the carrier moving or the drive chain? I ask because it's kind of hard to pull on the carrier without the drive chain moving side to side. My sprocket carrier is rock solid & the rear hub components are pretty much the same as yours, almost identical.
The o-ring probably keeps water & grunge from getting to the bearings.

Axle. I don't think it matters what side the axle nut is installed. On my 81 KZ650 it's on the right side as indicated in the service manual >> same as in your pic. The axle goes all the way thru the castle nut plus just a little beyond the nut, maybe a mm. I use a thick hitch pin.

If you can slide you sprocket (on the hub # from the left to right side and back on the axle your spacer #9 is missing between the races of the bearings #7 and #10.
It´s a common fault after a tire Change that spacer #9 get lost in the tire shop.....

Or the spacer is installed backwards. There should be a few threads showing past the castle nut.

Thank you all for your input! Sure enough, I was missing #9, coupling sleeve, but I had another one from another set of wheels I had. Removing the wheel gave me a chance to clean everything up, just waiting for the new parts now. Thanks again!

Are you planning on replacing the brake shoes? old, old, old ones can fail & lock the rear wheel.

I hadn't planned on it, but I do have another set.

Brake shoes. The adhesive that binds the linings to the shoes becomes brittle over time, so a lining can separate from a shoe, then get jammed between a shoe & drum, locking the rear wheel. It happened to me when rolling the bike off the center stand, so it does happen. I was lucky that it happened at home & in the driveway. It would be a real drag at speed & far from home.
