I have a 1981 KZ1000 CSR and word on the street is that the front brakes could use some loving. I was looking for some ideas on eBay and ordered some Ninja EX650 front brakes.

As you can see, they're a dual piston caliper and should be a substantial upgrade. The bottom bolt hole lines up perfect with the bottom, but the top is out and short by an inch. I have some 1/4 plate ordered and going to make a bracket and weld to the existing Ninja bracket to have them fit. I'll keep you updated.

Twin disc, 5/8 master, braided hoses, oem callipers and you can lock the front up at 70. Which means the braking power is greater than the tire adhesion. anything more is wasted so would be for asthetics only.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

The stock front brakes on my 78 KZ650 are excellent, two finger stops. I like it so much I'll be using the same twin disk setup on a KZ900 build I'm doing.

I was always under the impression that the front brakes weren't the most solid. Interesting. I may have to compare.

It depends on what you're doing with it. The brakes on my KZ750 are also excellent - but if I took it onto a track and did some heavy braking I'm sure a modern brake upgrade would be appealing. It's not so much the braking power that has improved over the last several decades, it's the fade resistance.

But for me, modern pads, new fluid and a recently overhauled brake system (new lines and seals) and it's as good as I'll ever need.

Upgrading to a modern setup won’t get more brake force. But a modern setup will have better anti-fade, weight reduction(handling), and a more progressive engagement- (floating disk) Learning to use the front brake to its full potential will make more of a difference in stopping ability than any money you can throw at it, other than ABS that is.

Nobody have built floating disc on the old setup with OEM calipper? Willit improve the brake? More progressive?
