. Then get a piece of aluminum plate and bend it into a bracket
That is what most folk do that want to change the light and / or eliminate the fender .
If you look close at my bike you will see I made a bracket as I describe so that
I could move my fender back

Interesting bike. A lot going on. I kinda keep my bikes simple to avoid clutter. Im not a bells and whistles guy - thats not quite to my tastes but glad you like it! .
In re the tailight, Im going to use the original one and recess it as it was done in the video. I dont want a rear fender AT ALL, which is kinda the point of the post. I found that video AFTER I made the post so I think Im going to follow the instructions in the video, but i do appreciate your response.

ZN700/1100. ZR550/750/1100 Zephyrs. ZRX1100/1200. probably others.
The ZN700's is kind of a snazzy. The early Vulcan 88 had the same one.
posted this one because the seller has it lit.

Thanks for this. Not sure how this would mount on my KZ650 though. I think im just going to make a bracket for the existing light like in this:

You realize that's a pristine example of a period correct turbo'd street drag bike right?

You would mount it the same as the stock one you plan on using. It has a couple of mounting studs that unbolt from the big bracket.
I know you expect to stick with the stock tail light, but here's one from a Zephyr 1100. It mounts the same as the ZN700 above.
Linking this one because it's NOS & what the heck.
Here's a Zephyr 750 w tail light similar to the ZR1100.
