While I'm at it you might want to look at a thread I started the other day titled, Staying Alive. My son is a bit older but he has been contemplating getting a motorcycle too and I've been thinking about aiding and abetting him with this.

Seeing that you exercise caution this will be right up your alley.

May I ask, do you ride?

It is a pretty sweet looking ride, but needs a lot of cleaning and love before any pic. He is working hard on her though. I'm very impressed with the quality of the parts used on this bike and how well almost everything still works even those she hasn't been taken care of for years.
So back to the reservoir, you are saying that there are hex bolts that I can access from the holes in the bottom of the reservoir and as I loosen them they will push it up?
I didn't see any or feel any hex bolts when I was looking and picking thru the reservoir holes earlier, but I will try again in the morning.
Sorry that I'm missing the obvious.

Yes, it's either that or I'm not being clear. At the bottom of the reservoir it's a false bottom with holes in it. Take a small 1/16" , 1 /8" Allen key and with the small end lower it down into one of the holes and pop it up.
It will not take much to do. Then you'll see the screws

I will definitely take a look at your post ! I do not ride, haven't since I was a kid.
I'm of course worried about my son riding. People just don't watch or pay attention driving like they should. Also this probably is not the best bike for a beginner, but right now I'm waiting to see what he does with her and how committed he is to get her road worthy and maybe I will spring for a smaller newer bike and take this one :) . He has taken the safety courses and his grandfather and all his uncles ride. They are good about telling him the good and bad of riding.
Also I guess he is not a teenager anymore, 20.

A good basic understanding of mechanics, machining, physics and other such uninteresting words are essential when you are skittering along on two wheels inches above the pavement. I applaud you for giving your son the freedom to choose his own destiny while you also aid and abet him. Good on you! You are truly a good sport.

Back to my question, do you ride a motorcycle?

I'm encouraged for you though because he has shown the initiative to work hard and become acquainted with his machine. I think that this was the sole factor in my being here to be writing this to you now.

I fervently believe that it makes the difference

Well, there are two sides to a coin. Yeah these bikes are not the new technology. But at the same time they aren't half liter bikes with over 100 hp and the likely hood of getting egged on to a race with the latest crotch rocket is not so likely.

Racing belongs on the track. Maybe consider a pact that he takes an approved rider safety course just to make mom and dad not worry so much.

Truthfully, I don't think your son sounds jaded into the latest and the greatest. I think it's about something else. I have no supportive evidence other than what I was thinking at that age. His mileage likely varies
