Bent side stand was created by irvin
Hi
I've recently noticed that my side stand is completely worn out around the nut holding it to the chassis. I can see it bending when I sit the bike on it, the metal is very weak and the bike leans way too much.
Do you know where I can find some high quality new side stand for a Z1000 shaft E2 ? I saw one sold by z1parts but its not the same OEM# as mine:
z1parts.net/z1-900-kz900-side-kick-stand/
(Mine is oem# 34024-1026)
Do you know if it will fit ? I'm quite tall so it's not a problem if the bike is seated more horizontally as long as it is stable.

Any KZ side stand will bend and be damaged if one sits on the bike while it is on the side stand. They are not made for that purpose. I suggest that once you get the side stand repaired / replaced you not sit on the bike while it is on the new stand or the same problem will happen again. Ed

Well I never did that but maybe the previous owners for the last 37 years did.
Anyway now the stand bends under the weight of the bike and it really does not feel safe. I never noticed this since I own it because I've been spending more time repairing it than riding it...
Edit: oh ok I understood why you wrote that, it's my fault I wrote that I was sitting on the bike when it bends, it's a bit difficult for me to explain these technical problems in English... What I was trying to say was that the stand is so worn out that I can bend it with my left foot when I lift it.

Have you tried to tighten it up? I got one from one of our members but it is too long. The one you're looking at is the one I will need. His is off a KZ 1000 shaft. Measure yours and PM me if you're interested.

Yes I've tried, it bends again as soon as I sit the bike on it, exactly the kind of behaviour you'd expect from an el cheapo stand...

Mine is 40 years old. I've tightened it and it lasts a while until it gets loose again. I tried to straighten it without heating it up. That little voice again and broke it. I welded it, it works but I need a new one. I want a chrome one this time. I saw nothing cheap about the Kaw stand. Pic of yours?

I don't have any pic but I have a video:
https//youtu.be/FFAsGu2ZR5s
This is what I can do with my hand, when the bike sits on it it bends even more. If I tighten it it bends again immediately.

The bolt gets worn out. Have you taken it out?

The bolt is fine, the problem comes from the U shaped part on the top of the stand, both parts bend very easily and are not parallel anymore.
I took everything out this afternoon and beside a sunburn and a scratch on my wrist when I put the spring back I got nothing out of it.

The bolt has a lock nut on the back that prevents it from spreading.
Steve
I don't like this new program. Harder to use than the old one.

Yes I have it too, watch again the very beginning of my video you'll see where the problem lies. The bolt is in very good shape compared to the stand actually. This afternoon I tightened the top of the stand, when I moved it it looked fine with just enough axial and radial play to rotate easily, as soon as I put the bike back on the stand I could hear the stand sliding on the concrete flooring and it was bent again...
