Lost key for 83 and 82 GPZ1100

Any advice on the best option to get keys for my 83 GPZ1100 AND 82 GPZ1100.

Any decent locksmith can make them.

If you've lost the keys, you'll have to replace the ignition cylinder/lock assemblies. They're not too expensive.

Yes, but you will have to bring the locksmith the ignition switch so they can take it apart and make a key to fit. It is important to match the key to the ignition switch, as the tank and seat locks aren't as sophisticated. They might cause cosmetic damage the switch in the process...

Back when these bikes were new, you could walk into the Kawasaki dealership with proof of ownership, serial number, and the lock code number stamped on the original key, and Kawasaki would issue a new key or give instructions on how a new key should be cut....it was expensive, though. I wonder if that can still be done today?

A locksmith can make you a key in about 5 mins. I watched a guy do this on one of my other bikes. He took a key blank and scuffed up the chrome applying an even brushed surface and then inserted the key in the lock and tried to turn it. Next he pulled out the key and examined the contact points where the key was contacting the tumblers and he used a small file to eliminate the contact points. He then inserted the key and did it again. Insert, try to turn, pull out, file contact points, repeat. 5 mins. later I had a custom made key, which he was able to duplicate using his duplication machine so I left with two new keys.

Remember that in 1982, Kawasaki did not have tumblers in the fuel tank cap (actually, any period Kawasaki key will open it), while in 1983, Kawasaki did have keyed tumblers in the fuel cap. So, if you purchase a replacement lock set for the 1983, it should contain ignition, fork lock, helmet lock AND gas cap.

I order by code off ebay..... $5-$25 a key depending on style of key.

I think I read somewhere that the key code is marked somewhere on back or underside of the ignition lock depending on the model. I've always just had an original key to order with.

Assuming he still provides the service, rstnick in the link Patton provided is probably the best way to get keys. Another source for replacements is eebbaayy: try searching the key number --- a while back I found a seller who cuts new keys using the code you provide. 2 Kawasaki Motorcycle Keys Code Cut Z5601 thru Z5650

1981 KZ650-CSR code location: ign switch, seat lock & key in photo. helmet lock not shown but the code is physically stamped into it in the same manner as the others. Example code: Z5064. I don't know if the GPz1100 stuff is stamped the same.

Yes, I can cut the keys if you have the key code #.
Most likely will be in the Z5001~Z6000 range.
