Swingarm question
18 Jul 2016 13:49
Ok guys currently rebuilding a 79 KZ 650. It's not a complete motor out resto but a fix, replace , restore as I go build. I bought a swingarm off eBay to rebuild and have powder coated . It came with 4 bearings and I later found out it was from a KZ1000. The guy that's working on my bike said it won't fit. So I found another one on eBay from a 1977 650. I just got it today and it seems identical to the 1000. Is there a difference between the 2 of them? I also want to convert to bearings as it currently has bushings. I have the sleeve from the 1000 swingarm. Do I just need to order 4 bearings? Thanks in advance.

the 650 arm is 1/4 approx.narrower at the pivot
and approx.1 1/2 longer
so the 1000 center bushing and the arm will have to be narrowed at the pivot to use.

I believe the swingarm pivot tube ID and the inner sleeve are the same, the bearings should be able to interchange, pivot tube needs to be shortened to 650 length.
The 1000 arm is wider at the pivot. Shorter than the 650 arm (I think) and uses a 20mm rear axle where the 650 has a 16mm rear axle.

Well the more I look at it they seem to be identical. It's possible it was listed wrong on eBay.

18 Jul 2016 15:58The VAST majority of kz parts are listed like alphabet soup on eBay (kz z1 650/900/1000 Z1R dragbike GS is usually in the title or description, which muddies the waters)Bigmd wrote: Well the more I look at it they seem to be identical. It's possible it was listed wrong on eBay.

The one on the right is supposed to be the KZ1000 arm.
Both are slightly less than 9" at pivot and 20.5" long

The biggest difference between the 650 and 1000 arm is the rear axle slot on the 650 should be 16mm, and it will be 20mm on the 1000 arm. The only other early kz with a 20mm rear axle is the 750 twin.
Also, the brake stay mount is on top of the arm for disc brake applications, for drum brakes its on the bottom

Ok thanks. I believe you jus cleared it up. The brake stay is at bottom. It looks like I have to 650 arms. With that said , can I just order new bearings? I already have end caps. The z1 bearing kit shows spacers . Do I need those?
